Mets Predicted to Land Young Right-Hander With Electric Fastball

The New York Mets have an excellent opportunity to improve their roster with the 38th overall pick in the 2025 MLB draft. While whoever the Mets draft will likely be a few years away from making their MLB debut, the Mets are still in a position to improve their farm system.

At the very least, this will give David Stearns another opportunity to either add a player his farm system can develop or a trade piece in the next few years. When searching for who the Mets might select, MLB.com recently predicted they’d take Aaron Watson, a right-hander out of Trinity Christian Academy in Jacksonville, Florida.

“38. Mets: Aaron Watson, RHP, Trinity Christian Academy, Jacksonville, Fla,” they wrote.

Watson’s Draft Profile

According to MLB.com, Watson has one of the best fastballs in the class. They rank that as a 55-grade pitch, noting that it’s electric and should only get better.

Watson, who is committed to the University of Florida, is currently the 25th overall player in the 2025 High School class, according to Perfect Game.

“There are high school arms who can really light up radar guns but are very much more throwers than pitchers. Then there are those who have a really good feel for pitching, even if there are prep hurlers with better pure stuff. Watson, who threw well for his Trinity Christian Academy team as a junior at last year’s National High School Invitational, falls more into the latter category, though improved stuff to go along with his pitchability had an up arrow next to his name throughout the summer showcase circuit, and he didn’t hurt himself with another strong NHSI start this spring.

“Because of his feel for pitching, the 6-foot-5 Watson has a pretty high floor and it’s not difficult to imagine a higher ceiling as he adds strength to that frame. He’s typically in the low-90s with his fastball, but has been up to 95 mph with more consistent velocity to come,” MLB.com wrote.

Inside the Mets’ Draft Process

Prior to the 2024 MLB draft, The Athletic spoke about what the New York Mets could be looking for in their selections. According to Will Sammon of The Athletic, people in the baseball industry believe that the Mets will adopt a blend of the strategies employed by the Houston Astros and Milwaukee Brewers when Stearns was with them.

They want to find starters with big-time electric raw stuff, which Watson has. They’re also interested in explosive athletes who can develop into elite bats. For Watson, his 6-foot-5 frame should give him an opportunity to develop into a starter with even more fastball velocity.

“Stearns worked with VP of amateur scouting Kris Gross in Houston from 2013 to 2015. Gross spent 11 seasons in the Astros organization and oversaw its past five amateur drafts. Houston did not have a first or second-round pick in two of them, part of its punishment for electronically stealing signs at Minute Maid Park in 2017 and 2018. Gross joined the team’s scouting staff in 2012. The Astros have since drafted and signed a major-league-high 64 players who appeared in the big leagues either with Houston or another club.

“Several in the industry believe the Mets might do a blend of what Houston and Milwaukee have valued in recent years. Mostly, that means explosive athletes with big tools and pitchers with electric raw stuff,” he wrote.
