The New England Patriots offense has been a bit of a mess since the departure of Tom Brady ahead of the 2020 NFL season. Yet, there is new hope for this franchise with QB Drake Maye displaying flashes of elite playmaking ability in his rookie year.
Despite the new additions and optimistic outlook for Maye entering his second season, one NFL analyst is still skeptical about the Patriots’ offense making a huge leap forward in 2025.
Patriots Ranked Outside of Top 25 Offenses Entering 2025 NFL Season
Despite the addition of a multitude of offensive playmakers, a blue chip offensive tackle prospect, and a new coaching staff — Kyle Soppe of Pro Football & Sports Network isn’t fully convinced the New England Patriots offense is going to improve in 2025 by ranking them 26th among the 32 teams across the league.
Soppe wrote, “Expectations are being heaped upon the New England Patriots due to the promise of Drake Maye and the growth we’ve seen in Year 2 for these franchise quarterbacks. We are cautiously optimistic about this franchise’s trajectory, but we would like to see more in the way of support/investment around him.”
Telling a rabid Patriots fan to stay cautiously optimistic after enduring just five agonizing years without the greatest quarterback of all time under center feels like an unrealistic ask from this fan base, but there is legitimate room for optimism with Maye entering 2025.
Soppe added, “TreVeyon Henderson and Kyle Williams were added in the draft, two pieces that project to be a bigger part of the long-term picture than the 2025 snapshot. The Patriots moved from 29th to 26th in our rankings last season and are a good bet to take another small step forward. However, we’d be careful in assuming that New England flies to, or even past, league average.”
The addition of two explosive playmakers via the NFL Draft should help give this offense a bit more juice, even if both rookies are a bit inconsistent from week to week.
Specifically, Henderson should be welcomed by open arms by Maye due to his excellent pass protection profile coming from Ohio State.
Speaking of pass protection, the selection of Will Campbell at No. 4 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft sent a loud and clear message that the organization wants to prioritize protecting their franchise quarterback over spending top draft assets at the wide receiver position.
Patriots Offense Has a Wide Range of Outcomes in 2025
The addition of Stefon Diggs this offseason should help Maye in the passing game.
Adding Will Campbell, Morgan Moses, Garrett Bradbury, and Jared Wilson to the offensive line should help protect Maye while increasing the ceiling of the rushing attack.
TreVeyon Henderson and Kyle Williams should have big impacts their rookie year.
Drake Maye could be the next superstar quarterback under center.
Despite real room for optimism entering the season, there is a ton of uncertainty about how this Patriots offense will actually perform in 2025.
The wide range of outcomes makes the Patriots offense a true wild card entering the season.
Personally, I believe in Drake Maye. It is just a question of whether or not the pieces around him — which includes coaches and players — manage to do right by him and put him firmly in place to succeed in 2025 and beyond.
