Chargers Add Former Safety Rodney Harrison to Team’s Hall of Fame

A

former Chargers‘ legend is finally receiving the recognition he deserves. Rodney Harrison played for the Chargers franchise from 1994-2002 and emerged as one of the NFL’s top defensive backs, helping the Chargers reach the Super Bowl in his rookie season. While known for his tenure with the New England Patriots, there is no doubt that Harrison’s impact on the Chargers was immense.

And during the 2025 NFL season, Harrison will receive the highest honor a player can receive from a team. On June 30, the Chargers’ organization announced that they will enshrine Harrison into their Hall of Fame during a Thurday Night Football matchup against the Minnesota Vikings on Oct. 23, making him the 36th member of the Chargers Hall of Fame.

Harrison’s Career with the Chargers

Drafted in the fifth round of the 1994 NFL Draft out of Western Illinois, Harrison played for the Chargers from 1994-2002, earning two Pro Bowl selections during his tenure– in 1998 and 2001. Starting his career off as a special teamer, Harrison became a starter at safety in 1996 and built up a reputation for being a big hitter, eventually earning the nickname of “The Hitman.”

During his time with the Chargers, Harrison recorded 21.5 sacks– a franchise record for defensive backs while racking up 26 interceptions– the most in team history for a safety.

“Rodney personified an era of Chargers football defined by physicality, emotion, relentless effort, toughness and grit,” president of football operations, John Spanos, said. “For nearly a decade, he gave everything he had to the Chargers, establishing a standard of accountability and setting the bar for competitive greatness.”

The Chargers created their Hall of Fame in 1976 and have included personnel from all capacities, from players and coaches to general managers and ownership. The most recent inductee is 2025  Hall of Fame inductee, Antonio Gates.

Harrison’s Career After the Chargers

Following the 2002 campaign, the rebuilding Chargers released Harrison but it did not take long for him to find a new team to call home. Signing a six-year contract with the Patriots, Harrison went on to play his final six seasons with the team, winning two Super Bowls and being named a First-Team All-Pro in 2003 and a Second-Team All-Pro in 2004. Harrison will be remembered most for what he did in New England, but it is what he did with the Chargers that propelled him into superstardom.

“What I remember most about Rodney is his incredible toughness,” former head coach Bobby Ross said in a statement. “He was a hard-hitting, relentless safety — fearless in every sense of the word. He had all the tools: speed, instincts, and range — but what separated him was that physical edge, that toughness you don’t always see, even among the best. He stood out from day one.”

A legendary figure in NFL history, Harrison’s career was a successful one but an induction into the Chargers’ Hall of Fame makes it that much more legendary.
