A former New York Yankees farmhand is finally getting his shot in the bigs.
Anthony Siegler, a 2018 first-round draft pick, is being called up the Milwaukee Brewers, Francys Romero reported Sunday on X (formerly Twitter).
Despite being drafted 23rd overall out of high school in Cartersville, Ga., Siegler, 26, never advanced further than Double-A in the Yankeesâ system. After slashing .234/.350/.398 with Double-A Somerset in 2024, he elected free agency in November.
Later that same month, Siegler signed a minor league contract with Milwaukee. He began the season with Triple-A Nashville splitting time between second base and catcher, and in 63 games batted .277 with seven homers, 35 RBI and an .881 OPS, the highest in his seven seasons in the minor leagues.
Yankees Had High Hopes for Anthony Siegler
The Yankees had high hopes for Siegler, whom they drafted 23rd overall â two picks after the Brewers selected high school infielder Brice Turang â and signed for $2.8 million. Siegler gained notoriety in high school because of his ability to switch hit and throw with both arms.
Yet Siegler struggled to assert himself as a Yankee, never living up to the potential that the club believed he had. Siegler dealt with countless injuries and had the entire 2020 season wiped out because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
After batting just .166 and .234 in 2023 and 2024, respectively, it appeared as if Siegler might never advance beyond Double-A.
With 25-year-old Austin Wells settled in as the Yankeesâ full-time catcher, Siegler didnât appear to have a clear path to playing time in New York, especially given his lack of consistent production in the minors.
Why Was Anthony Siegler Promoted?
Milwaukee has used Siegler all over the diamond in the minor leagues, working him in at second base, third base and catcher.
Siegler has displayed an impressive bat, slashing .277/.416/.465 with 20 stolen bases in just 63 games.
While Siegler doesnât have a ton of raw power, his increasing exit velocity and hard-hit percentages suggest heâs driving the ball better than ever before.
In another interesting development, Siegler recently ditched switch hitting. After batting just .097 right-handed, he is hitting primarily from the left side of the plate.
Siegler had an enormous May, hitting .386 with three homers, 12 RBI and a 1.177 OPS in 21 games. While his numbers leveled off in June, he still reached base at a high clip (.371) and demonstrated an ability to stay healthy.
The Brewers have not announced a corresponding move, though itâs possible that catcher William Contreras is heading to the injured list with a broken finger.
Milwaukee opens a three-game series on Tuesday in New York against the Mets.
