A 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of intentionally crashing his SUV into a motorcycle on a Chula Vista freeway and killing the rider Monday night, the California Highway Patrol said Wednesday.
Ulysses Jimenez of San Diego was booked into San Diego jail on suspicion of murder and hit and run causing injury in connection with the crash on southbound Interstate 805 just north of Telegraph Canyon Road, CHP Officer Jared Grieshaber said.
Jimenez is being held without bail, according to the Sheriff’s Office online arrest logs.
On the night of the incident, officers received a report that a Tesla SUV was traveling at a high rate of speed in the carpool lane when it “intentionally” crashed into a BMW motorcycle around 8:05 p.m., Grieshaber said.
The Tesla continued driving before crashing into a Ram 1500 pickup, investigators said.
The Tesla’s driver, later identified as Jimenez, then allegedly attempted to run away from the scene but was quickly arrested by CHP officers, according to investigators.
The motorcycle rider, a 53-year-old man from Chula Vista, died before he could be taken to a hospital. His name was not released pending notification of his family.
The pickup’s 24-year-old driver and his five passengers suffered minor to moderate injuries, Grieshaber said. They were taken to a hospital.
The circumstances leading up to the crash and why investigators believe the Tesla intentionally struck the motorcycle are still under investigation.
Investigators asked anyone with information about the crash to contact the CHP Border Division’s Major Crimes Unit at 858-944-6300.
