Trade Pitch Sees Mets Acquiring $120M Slugger in 3-Player Blockbuster

The New York Mets are battling for the top spot in the NL East and could be aggressive to bolster the roster ahead of the trade deadline on July 31.

MLB analyst Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report proposed a deal that would see the Mets acquire Alex Bregman from the Boston Red Sox in a blockbuster trade.

The proposed deal would be a blockbuster as New York would solidify third base while Boston would get one of the Mets’ top prospects and an MLB bat to replace Bregman.

The Mets would acquire Bregman, who signed a three-year, $120 million deal with the Red Sox, but there is an opt-out after this season, so Boston could look to move him and get something back. Bregman would play some great defense at third base for the Mets while also adding another good bat to the lineup. He’s hitting .299 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs this season.

New York would trade Marte to help offset some salary, as the designated hitter is in the final year of his four-year, $78 million deal. Marte’s bat would help replace the void of Bregman and keep Boston in the Wild Card hunt. Marte is hitting .245 with 4 home runs and 19 RBIs.

A big part of the return from the Mets would be MacLean, who is New York’s fourth-ranked prospect. The right-handed starter could go into Boston’s rotation right away, as pitching is a problem for the Red Sox. In Triple-A, MacLean is 2-4 with a 2.72 ERA in 9 games, including 7 starts. In the minors this season, he’s 5-5 with a 2.25 ERA in 14 games, including 12 starts.

Analyst Explains Mets-Red Sox Trade

The proposed trade from Rymer would be a blockbuster and likely the biggest trade in the MLB this season.

Rymer believes the Mets would have interest in Bregman as New York needs to do something to get back on track.

“The Mets did have interest in Bregman earlier in the 2024-25 offseason but eventually called off the pursuit and resolved their third base conundrum by re-signing Pete Alonso, which forced Mark Vientos back to the hot corner,” Rymer wrote. “Alas, neither he nor Baty has provided much value at the position. The Mets have gotten 0.3 rWAR from third base, which ranks ahead of only five other teams…

“With $10.4 million still coming to him, Marte would be in this deal partly to balance out the financials. But for Boston, the real point of taking him on would be as a means to effectively buy McLean from the Mets,” Rymer added. “Whether the Mets would do such a deal is far from certain, but McLean is the kind of guy the Red Sox should want if they’re going to offload Bregman. His slider alone is worth the price of admission, and he’s used it to compile a 2.25 ERA in the high minors this season.”

It would be tough for the Mets to part ways with MacLean, especially with how thin their rotation is. But, to acquire someone of Bregman’s status, the Mets would have to give up a top prospect, which MacLean is.

Mets Owner has Confidence in Team

New York has a terrible month of June, going 12-15.

It was a tough month for the Mets, and owner Steve Cohen sent a message to fans saying he still has confidence in the group.

“Tough stretch , no sugarcoating it. I didn’t see this coming. I’m as frustrated as everybody else. We will get through this period. Our injured pitching will come back over the next few weeks. It is unlikely the team’s hitting with RISP will continue at this weak pace. Keep the faith!,” Cohen wrote on X.

The Mets are 49-38 and holding onto a Wild Card spot.
