An explosion at a Yolo County facility containing fireworks, leaving seven people missing, will not affect any scheduled fireworks shows in Contra Costa or Alameda counties, officials in those counties said Thursday.
Investigators continue to probe why the explosions took place at the facility in the small town of Esparto, about 37 miles west of Sacramento. According to Cal Fire, the wildfire blaze that came after it has burned 78 acres and was 60% contained at 9 a.m. Thursday morning.
Authorities have confirmed the facility stored fireworks for a licensed fireworks business called Devastating Pyrotechnics. The company’s web site was down Friday morning.
The company supplied fireworks for the annual Fourth of July event at Lake Cunningham Park in San Jose, which was among those cancelled in the aftermath of the explosion. Events in Cloverdale, Chico, Lodi and at the El Dorado County Fair also were cancelled.
San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan said the cancelled fireworks show will be replaced by a drone light show instead.
Different vendors supply fireworks for the events scheduled Friday in other Bay Area locations.
In Contra Costa County, there will be fireworks shows at the Contra Costa Country Club in Pleasant Hill; Waterfront Park in Martinez; the Historic Downtown District in Antioch; the Pittsburg Marina; Mount Diablo High in Concord and Bayfront Boulevard in Hercules. A firework display over the Bay that can be seen in Oakland and Berkeley also is still scheduled.
The Shoreline Lake Fireworks Show in Mountain View and fireworks shows on Thursday night and Friday night at California’s Great America have shows that remain set to go.
