Last October, the Buffalo Bills made a trade for Cleveland Browns wide receiver Amari Cooper.
Cooper was supposed to be the missing piece in the Bills’ offense, as the team had traded away wide receiver Stefon Diggs before the 2024 campaign.
The Bills were missing a No. 1 receiver throughout the first part of last season, and Cooper could’ve changed it.
The only problem is that the 31-year-old receiver came in and played in only eight games, recording 297 yards and two touchdowns.
Cooper was in the last year of his contract in 2024, and he needed to have a strong season to secure a new deal, either in Buffalo or elsewhere.
With Cooper underperforming last season, he is still a free agent and could sign somewhere soon.
NFL training camps will begin at the end of July, which means players will start getting injured, potentially leading to Cooper being signed.
Many teams could use another receiver, and some of them are in the AFC East.
The New York Jets Urged To Sign Former Bills WR Amari Cooper
The New York Jets have been looking to add a No. 2 receiver next to Garrett Wilson for a few years, and Cooper could be that player.
Patrick McAvoy from New York Jets On SI thinks the Jets should try to add Cooper to the roster.
“Training camp is almost here and we will start to see all of the big decisions of the offseason come together on the practice field. The Jets don’t necessarily need to go make a big move. But, there are guys out there who would change the national perception for the team. One guy who is available is Amari Cooper,” McAvoy wrote.
“It doesn’t make sense that he’s still available in free agency. He’s a star-level wide receiver with some of the surest hands in football. He didn’t have his most prolific season stats-wise in 2024, but he’s still a guy who can help a team, for sure. The Jets have “moved in silence” this offseason, like Aaron Glenn said he hoped they would. There’s no way to know what New York will do, if anything, in free agency. But, Cooper is out there for the taking. Adding him would just help the Jets’ offense.”
The Jets Should Sign Cooper
The Jets are heading into an interesting season with new quarterback Justin Fields, and he needs more playmakers around him.
New York should add Cooper and see what he brings to the roster. Cooper is one of the best leaders in the locker room, and even though he isn’t the player he once was, he can still have a positive impact on the young players around him.
If Cooper heads to the Jets, he will be able to play the Bills twice a season. Cooper could prove to Buffalo that he still had a lot left in the tank, and they made a bad decision not signing him back.
The Bills head to New York during the second week of the season, so Cooper could be getting revenge on the team that didn’t want him very early in the season.
