Lonzo Ball joined the Cleveland Cavaliers via a trade with the Chicago Bulls. Isaac Okoro was the makeweight in the deal. Ball’s arrival means he will take over from the impressive Ty Jerome, who has now signed a deal with the Memphis Grizzlies.
Ball recently held an introductory news conference for the Cavaliers. He answered questions regarding his recent injury issues and his focus for the summer.
“Basketball is my life,” Ball said. “I’ve been playing since I was six years old, so about 20 years in now. It’s really all I know, so I’m just thankful and, like I said, blessed to be able to just be here playing for anybody, let alone the Cavs…It’s really been more so my body more than my game, honestly.”
Ball continued.
“I’m just making sure I’m prepared to be as available as possible and put myself in the best position to finish the season strong…June and
Ball missed two years of basketball due to a long-lasting knee injury. He returned to the Bulls rotation last season. However, a string of smaller injury issues, including one with his wrist, limited him to just 35 games. Cleveland will need Ball healthy and at his best if it wants to contend for a championship.
Lonzo Ball is Pleased to Join the Cavaliers
During an appearance on the âWhat an Experienceâ podcast, Ball shared his thoughts on being traded to a team that dominated the Eastern Conference last season.
âI feel like itâs just a blessing, bro,â Ball said. âTo be honest, I mean, everybody keeps asking me how I feel about the trade. Iâm like, s***, Iâm happy to still be playing anywhere, let alone a team that has a real chance to win a ring⦠My whole life, I feel like Iâve been playing the right brand of basketball, and thatâs to win games, so I feel like Iâm going to a great situation, and I just want to play my role and do what I can to help.â
If healthy, Ball will significantly improve the Cavaliers’ second unit. He’s an elite perimeter defender, especially at the point of attack. Furthermore, his ability to create scoring opportunities for others in the half-court could unlock some additional offense for Atkinson’s team.
Ball is Excited to Play For a Ring
During the same podcast appearance, Ball discussed the excitement of joining a team that is firmly in the championship discussion.
âJust playing, competing for a ring. I feel like that should be the goal, I feel like that is the goal,â Ball said. âSo, happy to get over there and get started. To meet everybody, get familiar with everything, and take it as far as we can.â
Ball will undoubtedly hope he can remain healthy so that he can play a part in the Cavaliers’ push for success. Otherwise, he may find himself on the free agency market next summer with very few options available.
