Canadiens Team Star Winger Could Lift No-Trade Clause For, Radio Host Claims

St. Louis Blues forward Jordan Kyrou could be willing to lift his no-trade clause to join the Montreal Canadiens, radio host and analyst Maxime Truman claims.

In an X post published on July 8, Truman, host of BPM Sports in the Montreal area, expounded on the reasoning behind the persistence of Jordan Kyrou rumors linking him to the Canadiens.

In the French-language post, Truman made it known that the Canadiens continue to search for a second-line forward who can play with Ivan Demidov and potentially Kirby Dach behind the Habs’ top line.

Kyrou is the sort of player, and given his particular links to the Canadiens, could be willing to waive his full no-trade clause to head to Montreal.

Truman pointed out that Kyrou has the same agent, David Gagne, as Habs’ captain Nick Suzuki. This interesting link gives the Canadiens an insider track on landing the 27-year-old Kyrou.

As Truman underscored, there is no imminent deal on the horizon. But if there’s one team Kyrou would be willing to go to, it would be the Montreal Canadiens.

Blues and Canadiens Could Work Out Win-Win Trade

Truman highlighted the two main pieces in a potential Canadiens-Blues trade involving Jordan Kyrou.

The two main pieces would be Kyrou heading to Montreal, with Mike Matheson heading to St. Louis. The rationale behind this move lies in the emergence of Jimmy Snuggerud, who could push himself into the Blues’ top six.

However, the Blues have a hole on defense. The loss of Torey Krug has opened up a spot for a top-four blue liner. That’s a hole that Matheson could fill.

Of course, this trade wouldn’t be a Matheson-for-Kyrou, one-for-one proposition. The deal would include additional pieces. But, at the very least, the core of the trade would involve those two players.

As for the remaining pieces, one would have to imagine draft picks and potentially prospects could change teams as both the Canadiens and Blues would be looking to add assets for future moves.

Montreal Has Cap Space to Add Kyrou

The biggest obstacle to a deal involving Jordan Kyrou to the Montreal Canadiens would be cap space. Notably, the Habs are currently over the cap ceiling by $5.42 million. While the Canadiens can shift the final year of Carey Price’s contract to LTIR, that would only account for about half of Kyrou’s $8.125 million cap hit.

Moving out Matheson’s contract would help. Matheson has a $4.8 million cap hit. That, and Price’s $10 million, would offset Kyrou’s cap hit this upcoming season.

Then, there’s Patrik Laine’s $8.7 million cap hit. That will be coming off the books next season as Laine is set to become a UFA. Even if the Habs re-sign Laine, it won’t likely be for a similar cap hit.

Moreover, the cap ceiling will jump to over $100 million next season. So, the 200-foot view makes the Canadiens a suitable landing spot for Kyrou, should the Blues be compelled to move him.

That proposition is highly uncertain as the Blues view themselves as playoff contenders and won’t want to part with Kyrou unless the return is overwhelming.
