Jonathan Bailey Says ‘Bridgerton’ Didn’t Help His Love Life: ‘It’s a Fantasy’

Jonathan Bailey poses for a photo during a red carpet event to promote the film "Jurassic World: Rebirth" in Seoul on July 1, 2025

He may play one of TV’s most beloved romantic leads, but Jonathan Bailey insists his real-life views on love are much more grounded. In fact, the “Jurassic World: Rebirth” star says his time on “Bridgerton” taught him nothing about actual romance. Instead, he calls the series a fantasy that doesn’t reflect real-life relationships at all.

Jonathan Bailey Says ‘Bridgerton’ Is All Fantasy: ‘Romance Is Grounded and Real’

Bailey may have portrayed the dashing Anthony Bridgerton across all three seasons of Netflix’s hit series “Bridgerton,” but when it comes to real-life romance, he’s not taking notes from the show. During a July 4 episode of “Chicken Shop Date” with Amelia Dimoldenberg, Bailey made it clear that his time filming the period drama hasn’t made him any better at love.

“Do you think being in ‘Bridgerton’ has made you better at romance?” Dimoldenberg asked. With a chuckle, Bailey replied, “No!”

He added, “It was a fantasy, isn’t it? Romance is grounded and real.”

Bailey also teased Dimoldenberg about the idea of appearing on “Bridgerton,” joking that she would play a “potential spinster” who is “uptight.” When she asked if he could cast her, Bailey laughed and said, “I have absolutely no power over that whatsoever.”

Bailey took center stage in season 2, where Anthony fell in love with Kate Sharma (played by Simone Ashley), while season 3 followed Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington’s love story. Anthony and Kate announced plans to travel to India ahead of the birth of their first child. Despite the storyline, Bailey confirmed he’ll return for season 4 of “Bridgerton.”

“What an amazing thing to be a part of,” he told “Late Night with Seth Meyers” in November 2024. “There’s gonna be lots of space for new people to come in… I’ll always pop back and say hello.”

Speaking to “The Hollywood Reporter,” Bailey said he has no plans to step away from the show completely. “I’ve never been someone who’s like, ‘Thanks, bye.’ It’s not in my nature,” he shared. “There’s a real sense of brotherly pride I feel in it.”

He even revealed that he recently filmed a wedding scene, hinting at the upcoming focus on Benedict Bridgerton’s romance with Sophie Baek. “People know that people get married in ‘Bridgerton’ — that’s not a spoiler, right?” he joked.

The ‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’ Star Seemingly Reveals His Relationship Status

Though he hasn’t gained romantic wisdom from “Bridgerton,” Bailey hinted that he may be open to finding love. When asked if he was available, Bailey replied, “I’m available. It’s just, I think there’s a genetic predisposition.”

The “Jurassic World: Rebirth” actor didn’t elaborate on his relationship status, but he has opened up about future plans in recent interviews. In December 2023, he told British Vogue he’s been reading books on adoption and is open to co-parenting. “I want to make sure I’m going to be present,” he said. “I might co-parent with a woman, but I’m thinking it will be with a man.”

Bailey has always maintained privacy when it comes to his love life. “I’m not discussing that,” he said in the same interview.

However, he has been vocal about his experience as a gay man in the entertainment industry. Speaking about coming out to friends in school, he said, “It was a conversation I really, really wanted to have, to see if everyone else was on the same page. But everyone went quiet.”

He also recalled a painful memory from a former teacher. “I was having trouble with my work and he said, ‘Well, if you weren’t so busy being a fairy you’d understand.’”

Despite the challenges, Bailey embraces his identity fully. “I reached a point where I thought, ‘(expletive) this,’” he told GQ in 2022. “I’d much prefer to hold my boyfriend’s hand in public or be able to put my own face picture on Tinder… than getting a part.”
