FREMONT – A suspect is in custody following a fatal shooting last week in Fremont, police said Wednesday.
The Fremont Police Department identified the suspect as Greg White, 56, of Fremont.
The shooting happened around 10:35 a.m. on July 1 in the area of Northport Loop West. Officers arrived to find a person suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Medical personnel rushed him to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The victim has yet to be publicly identified.
Officers detained White at the scene and ultimately arrested him on suspicion of murder, according to police.
Detectives obtained statements from 15 witnesses, viewed surveillance video and body-worn camera footage of the incident, and authored multiple warrants for evidence, police said, adding that crime scene investigators also found a rifle and ammunition in White’s RV.
On the morning of the fatal shooting, the suspect and the victim, who had known each other for years, met at White’s RV and got into an argument, according to police. White told police the person had threatened him with a long, sharpened copper pipe and attempted to carjack him.
Police said White claimed he warned the person to leave and shot him when he advanced toward him with the pipe. He then remained at the scene to speak with officers.
The case has been referred to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, according to police. White, meanwhile, remains in custody at the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin.
The death marked the city’s second homicide of the year.
