ANTIOCH — A Fourth of July fireworks explosion injured Chargers running back Najee Harris, prompting fans to worry over his upcoming season with his new team, multiple sources confirmed to the Bay Area News Group.
The nature and severity of Harris’ injury could not immediately be verified. Officials said other people had been hurt in the blast, but did not specify their number or how severely any of them had been injured.
Online forums and social media were quickly abuzz with fans exchanging rumors and concerns over Harris, an East Bay native. NFL veteran Jason Pierre-Paul, most recently of the Miami Dolphins in 2023, continued for some nine seasons after suffering a major hand injury in a 2015 fireworks incident.
Harris’ agent, Doug Hendrickson, did not comment when reached Thursday afternoon. Officials with the Chargers could not immediately be reached for comment.
The mishap happened about 12:20 a.m. on July 5 and injured more than one person. In a statement, Antioch police said some of the injured were treated at the scene and hospitalized. Others drove themselves to a hospital, police said.
“This is an unfortunate accident, and our thoughts are with the family and all those affected during this difficult time,” police wrote in a July 5 Facebook post about the incident. “We ask for patience and privacy for the families as the investigation continues.”
