A British mum has died in Corfu after she and her husband reportedly struggled to reach the shore while swimming in the sea.

The woman and her husband had been swimming off Roda Beach in northern Corfu in Greece on Wednesday, while their 16-year-old son was on the shore, when the tragedy happened.

According to some local news outlets strong currents and bad weather made them lose control, while others say they were swept out towards a rocky area.

The father was pulled to safety, and he and the son had to watch as rescuers battled to rescue the mother.

She was eventually pulled ‘unconscious from [the] water’, reports Corfu Press and rushed to a private clinic, where she was sadly pronounced dead.

Her body was then transferred to Corfu General Hospital, where the son and husband were given first aid and psychological support for shock.

The husband reportedly sustained minor injuries.

A post-mortem is planned to establish whether she was killed by drowning or if she sustained a fatal blow from the rocks she washed up on.
