Whenever the New York Yankees don’t win a World Series, it’s typically viewed as a major failure. It’s the harsh reality of playing in the toughest city in the world, but everybody on the Yankees, including Aaron Boone, understands that. Boone, perhaps more than anybody, has lived through it. Boone was a member of the Yankees back in his playing days, and knows just how tough the fans are.
Gary Sheffield Jr. Goes off on Social Media
As a manager, however, things have been different for the New York Yankees. While Boone has done an excellent job winning ball games at the highest level, he ultimately hasn’t won a World Series, something every Yankees fan wants. For that reason and some others, many want him fired.Â
That includes former MLB legend Gary Sheffield’s son, Gary Sheffield Jr., who recently went on social media and ranted about Boone’s decisions.Â
“Personally, and as always I will speak for myself, I believe the New York Yankees need a new voice and direction in the clubhouse at manager,” Sheffield Jr. wrote. “There is just too much going on in a bad way to possibly overlook whatâs going on from a leadership/Xâs and Oâs standpoint to ignore. You can be a great person and still not be the correct person for the job. This is more so about what type of voice the Yankees would be able to now focus on and that voice very clearly should be one of accountability and sound adjustment,” Sheffield Jr. wrote.Â
“The Yankees from a day to day standpoint donât make sense. How they build lineup. How they rest players. How they choose which positions players will play and when. How much players are failing improving. How players are displaying uncharacteristically low IQâs on defense. Base running, the list goes on,” Sheffield Jr. concluded. “Itâs all non sense.”
Sheffield Jrâs comments come after the Yankees lost the top spot in the American League East, currently on a tough skid before sweeping the Seattle Mariners and winning their final game of a three-game set against the New York Mets.
Does Boone Have an Excuse?
In Boone’s defense, the New York Yankees have been derailed by injuries throughout the year.Â
On top of that, he can’t go out there and make plays for guys. In the World Series last year, one could strongly argue that pitching Nestor Cortes against Freddie Freeman in Game 1 was the wrong decision. However, he didnât go out there and make the pitch for Cortes to give up a walk-off bomb.Â
He’s a professional, at the end of the day, and needs to find a way to get outs.Â
The same could be said for Aaron Judge, who dropped a fly ball in Game 5 and the game went south after.Â
However, if thereâs one thing Boone can do, it’s keep guys in the locker room happy, and when speaking to reporters recently, he wanted to ensure that the team stayed level-headed.Â
He understands they’re going through a tough stretch, but the skipper also knows the Yankees are very good, and things can change for them quickly.
âI donât want us to flinch,â Boone said, per MLB.com. âI want us to come here, ready to prepare. Prepare, compete, win. Weâre preparing to go out there and compete our [tails] off, and I know that if we do that well enough over time, weâll win.
âSo trust me, when youâre living this life â whether itâs [as a] manager, coaches, staff, certainly players â itâs hard. Itâs not fun. We work really hard every day and all season long. Itâs about shaking hands at the end of the day.â
If they don’t change, however, don’t be surprised to see Boone on the way out in the near future.
