It’s no secret that Kate Middleton has access to some of the most dazzling jewelry in the world. One of her tiaras has captivated the public for decades — and not just for its sparkle. The Queen Mary Lover’s Knot tiara was a favorite of the late Princess Diana. And now, it’s the go-to tiara for Middleton. Valued at an astonishing $135 million, this exquisite headpiece isn’t just a showstopper. It’s a living piece of royal history.

The Princess of Wales recently wore the iconic Lover’s Knot tiara at a state banquet for French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron at Windsor Castle. Its reappearance reminded royal watchers just how significant the piece really is. Middleton has had only 15 public tiara moments since her 2011 wedding to Prince William, but 10 of them have featured the Lover’s Knot.

Originally created in 1914 by the House of Garrard for Queen Mary, the tiara was designed using pearls and diamonds already in the royal family’s possession. Queen Mary even sacrificed another tiara — the Ladies of England Tiara — to commission this stunning piece.

Queen Elizabeth II loaned Princess Diana the tiara after marrying Prince Charles in 1981. However, she chose to wear her family’s Spencer Tiara on her wedding day. Still, the Lover’s Knot quickly became one of Diana’s favorites, despite its weight reportedly giving her headaches.

“This piece is a true royal treasure,” Maxwell Stone, creative director at U.K. jeweler Steven Stone, told In Style . “It’s renowned for its exquisite craftsmanship. The tiara is famously heavy enough to have caused discomfort to Princess Diana, underscoring the exceptional quality of the diamonds and pearls it holds.”

The Queen Mary Lover’s Knot Tiara—From the Vault to the Spotlight

Following Diana and then-Prince Charles’s 1996 divorce, the tiara was returned to Queen Elizabeth and remained out of public view for nearly two decades. It wasn’t until 2015 that Middleton brought it out of the vault again when she wore it at a diplomatic reception at Buckingham Palace. Since then, she’s made it her signature tiara, and has worn it with gowns from designers like Alexander McQueen and Marchesa.

The princess often complements the tiara with Queen Elizabeth’s Greville Diamond Chandelier Earrings, which were originally crafted by Cartier in 1918. The pairing is both glamorous and a nod to generations of women who wore the same jewels while shaping the modern monarchy.

The Lover’s Knot itself is sometimes referred to as the Cambridge Lover’s Knot because it is a replica of an even older tiara once owned by Princess Augusta of Hesse. While the original is thought to be in a private collection, the current version continues to shine at the highest-profile royal events.

Kate Middleton’s Meaningful Choice and Impeccable Styling

Middleton’s latest appearance in the Lover’s Knot came with extra symbolism. She paired the tiara with a stunning bespoke red gown by Sarah Burton for Givenchy, honoring both a British designer and a major French fashion house. Burton was the designer behind her iconic wedding dress while at Alexander McQueen.

Every detail was intentional. The gown’s bright red hue echoed the colors of the French flag. Her Givenchy clutch was embroidered with lily of the valley, a flower with ties to both French tradition and Christian Dior. Per People, lily of the valley “traditionally represents happiness, humility, and motherhood,” and was considered Dior’s good-luck charm.

Stone noted that Middleton is an immensely thoughtful dresser, and said it was “truly heartwarming” to see her wear the Lover’s Knot tiara. He called it “a beautiful symbol of continuity, respect, and royal heritage.”
