The Detroit Lions are heading into a new season, and it’s a make or break year for some of the team’s players. Even the best players in the NFL sometimes are no longer a good fit with their teams for various reasons, whether it’s the makeup of the evolving lineup or contract issues. So, don’t be too surprised, or heartbroken, if you see the Lions part ways with some solid players.
The upcoming 2025-26 season is a doozie for the Lions, but it’s nothing they can’t handle. Sadly, every team in the NFC North got slammed with a difficult schedule, since the division is so strong. So, with the season just a few short months way, it’s a good time to look at the Detroit Lions’ roster and see which players might be in the hot seat or at least the warm seat.
The Lions have already made moves during the offseason, including cutting ties with some players and adding new ones. Now, one NFL voice thinks that a Detroit quarterback is in the hot seat going into minicamp, and it’s hard to argue with him on that point. In order the stay with the team, this player may have to pull out all the stops.
Lions QB is In the Hot Seat
The Lions are just days away from their rookie camp, which starts on Wednesday, July 16. The veterans start their camp on Saturday, July 19. So, it’s that exciting time of the season, right before things really heat up. As always, everyone will be looking at the players on the field and figuring out who stays and who goes.
The Lions’ quarterback room isn’t as interesting as some other rooms in the NFL, and really, the only known is that Jared Goff is the Lions’ franchise quarterback. In a piece published on Friday, July 11, Cem Yolbulan of Detroit Jock City says that newbie Kyle Allen “hasn’t proven that he is QB2 material so far this offseason, leaving him with a ton to prove in training camp.”
“At this point, the Lions were hoping for Hendon Hooker to emerge as the surefire backup quarterback behind Goff,” Yolbulan notes. But, that just hasn’t happened yet, partly due to injury, so it’s not totally his fault. Regardless of the reasoning, there just isn’t solid proof that Detroit is confident with having Hooker as quarterback No. 2.
So Far, Detroit Lions Quarterback is ‘Not Promising’
So, the Lions have signed veteran quarterback Allen, but “early results from OTAs, however, were not promising,” Yolbulan notes. “Neither player reportedly flashed, leaving the backup quarterback spot still up for grabs.”
The Lions have been lucky in that they haven’t had to use a backup quarterback for an extended period of time, because Goff has remained uninjured, but nobody knows when that luck will run out.
Enter Allen. “The 29-year-old signal caller has significantly more experience than Hooker, starting in 19 games in his NFL career,” Yolbulan states. “He has had solid stretches early in his career, but flamed out and fell out of favor over the last few seasons.”
So, it’s crunch time for Allen, or else the Lions will have to bark up another quarterback tree.
