To say former NFL Most Valuable Player Adrian Peterson’s post-football life isn’t going smoothly wouldn’t be totally accurate — things were going bad way before he last played in an NFL game in 2021.
Since he stopped playing, they’ve really only gone from bad to worse. And now, another weird chapter is on the way.
According to TMZ Sports, Peterson will fight in a Celebrity Boxing match against the same man he recently fought during a wild brawl at a poker club in Houston and seemed to get the worst of it.
From TMZ Sports: “Adrian Peterson will be throwing hands against his poker rival again soon … TMZ Sports has learned he’s officially signed a contract to fight his adversary in a boxing ring! The NFL legend put his John Hancock on a Celebrity Boxing contract Wednesday evening … and after Joe ‘Baby Joe’ Castaneda inked his deal with the fight org. earlier this week — a sanctioned bout between the two is now incoming.”
Peterson, who made approximately $103 million in 15 NFL seasons from 2007 to 2021, played for the Washington Redskins in 2018 and 2019. He had his last career 1,000 yard rushing season in 2018.
No date has been set for the fight as of July 13.
Wild Brawl In Poker Hall For Former NFL MVP
The latest weird, sad chapter came when TMZ posted a video of Peterson on June 19 that showed him engaged in a wild fistfight over a poker game in Houston, Texas, that occurred on May 27.
In the fight, Peterson and Castaneda trade blows, with Peterson getting the worst of it at the beginning as he falls and appears to hit his head on a chair. Peterson recovers from the fall, gets up, and starts to get the upper hand momentarily, landing several punches before the fight is broken up.
From TMZ: “The shocking scene unfolded back on May 27 … while Peterson and others were playing cards at JokerStars — a social club in Houston, Texas … Peterson tells us … he and one of his buddies were involved in a disagreement while at a gaming table, ‘one thing led to another,’ and they squared up.”
It’s just the latest in an ongoing series of bad headlines for a player who should be a first ballot Pro Football Hall of Famer when he’s eligible in 2027.
Mounting Legal, Financial Woes For Peterson
Peterson was arrested in Minneapolis in the early-morning hours on April 25 and charged with driving under the influence after he attended a public draft party for the Minnesota Vikings.
Peterson played for the Vikings from 2007 to 2016 and was named NFL Most Valuable Player in 2012, when he rushed for 2,097 yards.
In September 2024, a judge in Houston ordered Peterson, a Palestine, Texas native, to forfeit assets at his Missouri City, Texas, home over an estimated $12 million debt. The judge assigned a court-appointed receiver and constables to go to the home to ensure a peaceful transfer of assets..
In 2014, Peterson was indicted in Montgomery County, Texas, on charges of reckless or negligent injury to a child after he was accused of beating his 4-year-old son with a tree branch and causing “slash-like injuries” to the boy’s body.
Peterson was eventually suspended for all but 1 game of the 2014 season after he pled no contest to a misdemeanor charge of reckless assault to avoid jail time.
