M6 near Lancaster ‘closed for some time’ after multi-vehicle crash

Part of a major motorway is closed this afternoon after a multi-vehicle crash.

The M6 is closed southbound between Preston and Lancaster between junction 32 and junction 33.

Drivers are facing delays of up to an hour according to National Highways while people have been told to allow extra times for their journeys.

There are tailbacks heading into Preston and up towards Cumbria because of the disruption.

All traffic was stopped just after 10.30am this morning, with delays expected into this afternoon.

Traffic queues have also formed on the northbound carriageway because of onlookers.

Emergency services including the air ambulance are all currently at the scene.

A police spokesperson said: ‘At 10:27am this morning, we received a report of a multi-vehicle collision, between Junctions 32 and 33 on the southbound carriageway of the M6.

‘Our officers, and other emergency service colleagues remain at the scene, where the ambulance service are treating people.

‘This is very much in its early stages, but we anticipate that the motorway and A6 junction will be closed for some time, as we, and our colleagues respond to the incident.’

They added: ‘We want to update you and let you know that M6 North and Southbound between junction 33 to Forton Services is currently closed due to a road traffic collision.

‘In the meantime, we’d recommend looking for an alternative route and driving carefully, leaving plenty of extra time to get to your destination.’

A National Highways spokesperson added: ‘Traffic officers are in attendance to assist with traffic management.

‘Plans are being made to release traffic caught within the closure.’
