The New York Yankees, like several other contending teams, are looking to make a big starting pitcher addition ahead of the July 31st deadline. For New York, they have been handed bad news all year, it seems like on the starting rotation front.
First, it was Gerrit Cole missing the entire 2025 season with Tommy John, then AL Rookie of the Year Luis Gil went down with an injury (he’s yet to pitch this season), and most recently, Clarke Schmidt is also having to get reconstructive surgery. If there’s a team that desperately needs to make a depth starter acquisition, it’s the Yankees. After Max Fried and Carlos Rodon, the rotation thins out immensely after that.
Yankees Land Twins’ Joe Ryan in Blockbuster Trade Idea
The Minnesota Twins are likely headed towards being sellers, as it’s already been reported that several teams have strong interest in all of their quality arms. That includes Joe Ryan, who is certainly going to be a hot commodity over the next few weeks. Ryan had a stellar first half of the season for the Twins and was named to the 2025 All-Star team. Over 18 starts this season, Ryan has posted a 2.72 ERA in 109.1 innings. He also has 121 strikeouts and a WHIP under one.
Ryan has been linked to other teams, like AL East rival Boston Red Sox, but it’s also been reported that the Twins will only ship the outstanding starting pitcher if they are completely “overwhelmed” by an offer. Because Ryan isn’t set to be a free agent again until 2028, the Twins want to ensure they will get a massive haul for the potential rotation-changing right-hander. For the New York Yankees, the starting pitching has held them back in recent weeks. They lost their division lead in the AL East and now have the same number of wins as the surging Red Sox. It is likely to be a bidding war between the two rivals on who will potentially acquire Ryan. However, he is a game-changer and will solidify any roster that he joins.
What Would This Deal Cost New York?
As noted, the Minnesota Twins will only consider a deal if it’s at an overwhelming price, which means the New York Yankees would have to give up some equity in their farm system. A good return for Ryan includes two MLB players and a highly-touted prospect. The two MLB players are Ben Rice and starter Marcus Stroman, and a prospect that could be traded is their third-ranked prospect, Ben Hess, who is currently in high-A.
Rice started pretty hot this season, but has cooled down, and only plays against right-handed pitchers. Stroman has been on and off the Injured List, so it also makes sense to move on from him. The Yankees are a team with World Series aspirations, and with a payroll like theirs, they have no choice but to go all-in this deadline. And even that potential trade package might not be enough for Ryan, who again is controllable through the 2027 season.
As the deadline gets closer, watch out for the Yankees to make a big splash in the starting pitcher market, as they head towards the final two months of the season in a tight four-team AL East race.
