The San Antonio Spurs just got massive news on their franchise superstar Victor Wembanyama.
According to French newspaper L’Equipe, Wembanayama said that he is cleared to play next season after he missed a chunk of the 2024-25 season due to blood clots in his right shoulder.
“I’m officially cleared to return,” Wembanyama said to the French publication. “It just happened…I got the green light from the Spurs’ medical staff just [on Friday]. Phew, I’ll finally be able to play a bit of basketball again.”
Wembanyama played in just 46 games last year before missing the second half of the season due to health concerns. In that span, he averaged 24.3 points, 11 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and a league-leading 3.8 blocks per game.
Before he was ruled out for the remainder of this past year, Wembanyama was the leading favorite to win the Defensive Player of the Year award and was named a first-time All-Star in his second NBA season.
Wembanyama’s Historic Start
Wembanyama was officially diagnosed with deep-vein thrombosis in his right shoulder after he returned from the 2025 NBA All-Star Weekend. The Spurs initially didn’t give an exact return date or recovery timeline, but instead just stated that their young superstar would be ready for the start of next season.
Now, the 21-year-old has given a decisive answer, stating that he has been cleared to return to basketball activities going forward.
Through his first 117 games across two years, Wembanyama has proven to be one of the most impactful and dominant players in the NBA. Although injuries cut short both seasons, he led the league in blocks each year and broke multiple records previously set by some of the best players in the history of the sport.
He scored more points than LeBron James, recorded more rebounds than Anthony Davis, blocked more shots than Shaquille O’Neal, and made more three-pointers than Stephen Curry in his first 100 games played. Though he missed nearly half of the season, he was on pace to become the third player in NBA history to average 24, 10, 3, and 3, putting him alongside Hall of Famers Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Hakeem Olajuwon.
His first two seasons have been nothing short of historic, and though he has dealt with multiple injuries and health concerns early on in his career, when on the court, Wembanyama is one of the most impactful players the league has ever seen.
San Antonio Is All In On Wembanyama
While the Spurs missed out on the 2025 NBA Playoffs with a record of 34-48, their moves over last season proved that they are all-in on surrounding Wembanyama with top-tier talent.
Before the trade deadline, they made the move to acquire former All-Star De’Aaron Fox from the Sacramento Kings. They landed the second overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft and added Dylan Harper, while also drafting Carter Bryant with the 14th overall pick.
San Antonio also became the second team in NBA history to have back-to-back Rookie of the Year winners, as after Wembanyama, Stephon Castle won the award this past season. Along with Castle and Fox, the Spurs roster features young players like Devin Vassell, Jeremy Sochan, Keldon Johnson, and Julian Champagnie. They have also added Luke Kornet and Kelly Olynyk as backup big men for Wembanyama over the summer.
In non-player news, the Spurs saw the departure of long-time head coach and the all-time winningest coach in NBA history, Gregg Popovich, after multiple health issues over the past year. Instead, Mitch Johnson was named the team’s next head coach in his place, leading Wembanyama and their newly redeveloped roster going forward.
While still out and recovering earlier in the summer, Wembanyama spent time in China and participated in a ten-day stay at a Shaolin temple, living with monks and training in kung fu.
