Thousands of people across south London are without water this afternoon because of a burst water pipe.

Some people have been forced to leave their homes because of significant flooding after the pipe burst on Ilderton Road, Bermondsey.

Thames Water said people in 12 postcode areas are without water while engineers try to fix the issue.

A rest centre has been set up for residents who have been evacuated from their homes due to the flooding.

One local resident called Ash said: ‘The water came all the way down the road, from the bridge all the way down to the train station.

‘I’ve only ever seen this in a tsunami or a hurricane-like situation.’

A Thames Water spokesperson said: ‘We know some properties have unfortunately been affected by flooding.

‘Our team is on the ground supporting residents. To keep everyone safe, traffic management is in place while work is ongoing.

‘Most customers should begin to see their supply come back over the next hour or two. Pressure may be lower than normal at first, but it will continue to build.’

People on X have posted about the lack of water including Lesley McGivern who wrote: ‘There’s a massive water leak. Homes evacuated. Wonder how long it will take Thames Water to sort this out?!’

Meanwhile Christine Clements wrote: ‘Can you pls advise when the water will be restored after the burst water main in Rotherhithe SE16.’

Another person added: ‘Why is my water pressure so low this morning?’
