2025 Emmy Milestones: Kathy Bates, Harrison Ford and Bowen Yang Make History

The 2025 Emmy nominations brought a lot of surprises as well as shrugs.

HBO and Apple TV+ are getting recognized for the high quality shows they developed including “The Penguin” and “Shrinking” respectively. HBO leads the tally with 142 nominations in total.

However, the records set this year within the nominations are notable in themselves.


Records, Records, Records

Kathy Bates – veteran actor of a thousand roles – is officially the oldest actress to be nominated for Lead in a Drama Series thanks to CBS’s legal procedural reboot of “Matlock.” 

Harrison Ford made waves as Dr. Paul Rhoades in Apple TV+’s “Shrinking.” Now, thanks to his stellar acting in the second season, that role is an Emmy nominated one. Ford is only the second oldest nominee for the comedy category. The first goes to Alan Arkin who was 86 when he was nominated for his role in the Netflix show “The Kominsky Method.”

Bowen Yang – “Saturday Night Live’s” venerable millennial voice of Gen Z. – is officially the most nominated Asian male performer. This year’s nomination for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series put him at a total of five.


First Timer’s Club

As with every ceremony, there are a litany of first time nominees. 

Thanks to his performance in “The Studio,” comedian Ike Barinholtz landed his first time nod. Comedic actor Zach Cherry joins him due to his role in “Severance.”

Young “Adolescence” star Owen Cooper is being noticed thanks to his starring part on the Netflix show. Erin Doherty is also on the list.
