Although fans often credit “Charlieâs Angels” (2000) as the beginning of their iconic friendship, Barrymore once revealed their connection goes back even further. âWe met when I was 14 and she was 16. I was working at a coffee house, and she was a junior model,â Barrymore said during an Instagram Live as per Business Insider.
âShe’s still my bestie and sistieâsistie? Thatâs a new word. Itâs Cameron Diaz!â Their friendship blossomed long before fame, and it has continued to thrive in the spotlight.

Diaz has also opened up about the strength of their bond. In a 2016 appearance on SiriusXM with Andy Cohen, she praised Barrymore for being a constant in her life. âWe’ve been in this industry for a really long time together and that’s a feat,â Diaz said. âTo have people that you’ve known for that longâthose are real relationshipsâit’s real friendships. We’ve gone through a lot in life together.â
She continued, âAs you get older you start to lose people in your life and when you lose people in your life you have less of a purpose, so it’s really, really important to stay engaged.â
The longtime trio â Diaz, Barrymore & Lucy Liu â first lit up the screen together in the 2000s “Charlieâs Angels” and reunited again for the 2003 sequel, “Charlieâs Angels: Full Throttle”.
In 2020, Barrymore welcomed both Diaz and Liu as the first guests on “The Drew Barrymore Show“, marking a full-circle moment that celebrated their enduring friendship.
âThe thing that I love about our friendship is that we have been there in all the big and important moments,â Barrymore shared at the time. âWe’ve also been there in the small moments and the casual moments⦠It’s not a Hollywood fairytale â it’s real, and we go through real stuff with each other.â
More than two decades later, their bond remains the same: grounded, genuine, and built to last.
