The Carolina Panthers are heading into the 2025 season with momentum for the first time in a few seasons. Bryce Young’s stock is on the rise, but for Nate Davis of USA Today, the same can’t be said about the Panthers uniforms. Davis believes there is a lot to be desired when it comes to Carolina’s threads.
Davis ranked all 32 uniforms in the NFL from worst to first in his article “NFL uniforms ranked: Where do Commanders, Saints land after revealing new alternates?” In the article, Davis had the Panthers uniforms ranked near the bottom, coming in at 31st in the league.
Outdated Look
Davis, in his article, takes the Panthers to task for being “outdated, as most 1990s get-ups do.” The Panthers have consistently worn a combination of teal, white, and black since their inaugural season in 1995. From Sam Mills to Jake Delhomme to Cam Newton to Bryce Young, each has worn the Panthers’ signature colors. The Panthers are a team that largely sticks to tradition. Even when they make uniform updates, such as this past season, it is the uniforms that draw inspiration from the past. The Panthers wore silver helmets, white jerseys, silver pants, and white socks for their regular-season finale against the Atlanta Falcons. According to Anthony Rizzuti of Yahoo Sports, this was the first time the Panthers had worn this combo since 1998.
The most significant update the Panthers have made to their uniforms is the 2012 alteration of their logo; however, the jerseys did not change, according to a 2024 WCNC Charlotte article by Nathaniel Puente. “Panthers fans in 1995 saw almost identical black and white jerseys to what the Panthers will wear in 2024,” Puente said.
Too Many Combinations
Another issue that Davis took with the Panthers uniforms was the number of combinations the team wore in 2024. Davis said, “The Panthers just can’t stop tinkering – literally using 10 different uniform combinations in 2024. Talk about a lack of identity.” The Panthers, using various uniform combinations, employed three base colors: black, blue, and white. According to Panthers Wire, the most used combination in the 2024 season was their white jerseys, which were worn in 11 games. Black jerseys were worn four times, and blue jerseys were worn two times.
The Panthers’ uniform that the team wears the most, by far, is their white-on-white ones. According to Panthersunis.com, the team has a record of 120-136-1 in those uniforms, including a Super Bowl appearance in Super Bowl 38 against the New England Patriots.
Potential New Helmets
The Panthers latest uniform alterations occurred in 2022, when they added black helmets to their repertoire. Panthers fans have speculated about the addition of new helmets to the rotation for the 2025 season. However, Panthers fans will have to wait another year for new helmets. Andrew Lind of SportsLogos.net has revealed the six NFL teams that will receive new helmets for the 2025 season. The teams receiving new helmets are: the Washington Commanders, Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Chargers, Pittsburgh Steelers, New Orleans Saints, and Green Bay Packers.
The Panthers may not make many updates to their core uniforms. The team feels like they do not need to mess with tradition. However, the team aims to enhance its performance on the field ahead of the 2025 season.
