Starting off your season in the doghouse isn’t recommended, but that’s where Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs finds himself just days before the start of training camp.
According to a report from The Dallas Morning News, Diggs is facing a hefty salary reduction for missing offseason workouts.
“Cowboys officials plan to withhold $500,000 of cornerback Trevon Diggs‘ salary for not working out enough with the team this offseason,” DMN’s Calvin Watkins wrote on July 17. “Team officials will deduct $500,000 from Diggs’ $9 million base salary for his failure to complete at least 84% of his offseason workouts, a person with knowledge of Diggs’ contract told The Dallas Morning News. Diggs’ agent did not respond when asked for comment about the salary deduction.”
Diggs Has One Of NFL’s Worst Contracts
Diggs has 4 years and $66.5 million remaining on the 5-year, $97.6 million contract extension he signed in March 2023. He had 27 interceptions through his first 3 NFL seasons and was a 2-time Pro Bowler and NFL All-Pro, but in the 2 seasons since he signed his extension Diggs has missed 21 games due to injuries.
In 2024, Diggs had 7 interceptions through 11 games before his season ended to repair cartilage damage in the same knee he tore the ACL in during a practice before Week 3 in 2023 that cost him the majority of the season.
Diggs had the opportunity to work out and do rehab work on his knee at his team’s facility but chose not to do so, last year and this year.
How Diggs has rehabbed injuries in the past has been an issue between himself and the team, with owner Jerry Jones publicly calling him out in April.
“He’s working hard,” Jones told Yahoo Sports. “That’s very important because if he will be very good and diligent in his rehab process then he’ll get back quicker. And when he does get back, he’ll be sounder. If he has not worked as hard, he is more subject to injury. He’s learned that one time. I have a lot of hope that his actual rehab and experience from the time before is really helping him out. I think it is.”
Cowboys Have Potential Out With Diggs After 2025
The good news for the Cowboys is if they can suffer through one more year with Diggs, they can cut or trade him after the 2025 season with minimal financial injury. That would incur a dead cap hit of approximately $8.7 million spread across the 2026 and 2027 seasons, which is manageable.
That could also free them up to pay another elite cornerback on the roster in DaRon Bland, who earned NFL All-Pro honors in 2023 after he led the NFL with 9 interceptions in 2023 and set the NFL record with 5 interceptions returned for touchdowns.
Bland, who missed 10 games due to injuries in 2024, is headed into the final season of his 4-year, $3.96 million rookie contract and could very well leave in free agency with another big season.
There’s a good chance Diggs won’t even be on the field for the Cowboys in their season opener at the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday, September 4, with rookie cornerback Shavon Revel likely to start in his place.
