California man admits stabbing wife to death because she was unfaithful, police say

Eleazar Gato Lopez, a 51-year-old Fontana resident, was so upset that his wife cheated on him, police say, that he stabbed her to death. Lopez then turned the weapon on himself, called 911, lay down next to his dying wife and waited for officers to arrive.

Lopez was charged with murder on Monday, July 14, Superior Court records show. Lopez was still in critical condition in a hospital on Thursday, said Officer Daniel Romero, a Police Department spokesman. No court date has been set.

Lopez called Fontana police at about 10:40 a.m. on July 10, reporting that he stabbed his wife “because she had been unfaithful,” a news release said. “Lopez also stated that he had stabbed himself and that his wife was beyond help.”

Police who arrived at the home in the 9400 block of Alder Avenue forced their way in and found Lopez lying on the bed, covered in blood, next to a dead 41-year-old woman.

The victim’s name was being withheld on Thursday, Romero said.
