Tigers-Diamondbacks Potential Trade Would Spark Reunion

Eugenio Suárez, a native of Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela, and former Detroit Tigers prospect, has made no secret of interest in returning to Detroit ahead of the July 31 trade deadline. The two-time All-Star third baseman told the Detroit Free Press he’s “definitely” open to heading back to where his major league journey began.

“To finish where everything started, it would be cool,” Suárez said. “It would mean a lot to me … Since I was there, it’s been a lot different. It’s a new team with a lot of young guys and a lot of talent … I think they have a really good chance to make it more than the playoffs this year.”

Reflecting on Detroit’s Evolution

Suárez is keenly aware of Detroit’s transformation since his 2014 debut. When asked about the Tigers’ current trajectory, he emphasized their growth:

“Since I was there, it’s been a lot different,” he remarked. “It’s a new team with a lot of young guys and a lot of talent. I think they have a really good chance to make it more than the playoffs this year.”

This praise comes as the Tigers lead Major League Baseball in wins post-All‑Star break, buoyed by pitching performances, Tarik Skubal among them, and a deep young lineup

Embracing Uncertainty: “Baseball is baseball”

Despite his openness to joining Detroit, Suárez remains grounded in the unpredictability of mid-season trades. When asked whether a return would surprise him, he remained pragmatic:

“We never know,” he said. “Baseball is baseball. I might be finishing where everything started. It doesn’t sound crazy. We’ll see.”

This season, Suárez is having one of the best campaigns of his career. With 31 home runs, 78 RBIs, and an .889 OPS, he’s among the National League’s most potent bats. Such production at third base would greatly bolster Detroit’s lineup and serve as a clear offensive upgrade over what’s currently there.

Suárez Draws Interest Far Beyond Detroit

While Detroit remains a sentimental favorite, Suárez has cast a wide net when discussing trade possibilities, acknowledging intrigue from teams across the league.

New York Yankees:
Suárez praised the Yankees’ winning mentality, saying, “Yankees is Yankees … a team that wants to win. If I go over there … I would do my best … Try to help them win the World Series.”  With New York lacking a dependable right-handed bat at third base, his power–31 homers, .889 OPS, 78 RBIs–checks all their boxes. His openness about stepping into a high-pressure market indicates mutual interest.

Chicago Cubs:
The Cubs, struggling at the hot corner, have surfaced as serious contenders. Analysts highlight Suárez’s track record against them, 36 career homers, and note he’d immediately boost a lineup ranked poorly in OPS at third base (.531). Suárez is poised to plug that offensive gap for Chicago.

Seattle Mariners, Milwaukee Brewers, New York Mets, Cincinnati Reds, St. Louis Cardinals:
Suárez is no stranger to the Pacific Northwest. He spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons with the Mariners, helping them snap their postseason drought in 2022. A potential return to Seattle would be a reunion, though it might carry less emotional resonance than Detroit. Still, Seattle has the type of prospect capital—especially MLB-ready pitchers and catchers—that could appeal to Arizona if they look to retool at the deadline.

A comprehensive outlook from JustBaseball names the Mariners, Yankees, Cubs, Brewers, and Mets as front-runners for Suárez’s signature. The Mariners in particular could offer a significant haul of MLB-ready talent–pitchers and catchers–matching Arizona’s goals. Additionally, AZ Snakepit identifies the Reds, Mets, and Cardinals as playoff-hopeful clubs with average third-base production desperately needing a boost.
