Yankees Trade Idea Lands 2.82 ERA Twins’ Starter

The New York Yankees are expected to be one of the more active teams at Major League Baseball’s trade deadline at the end of July. They have one of the highest payrolls in baseball and are all-in on this season, and hope to return to the Fall Classic. With an MVP-type season from Aaron Judge and ace Max Fried being stellar so far, the Yankees are poised to make a deep run in the playoffs.

However, they are currently a few games back of the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League East, and could afford to add to their roster at the deadline, especially in regards to their starting rotation.

The Minnesota Twins are one of those teams that have a plethora of assets that teams like the Yankees will come calling for.

Yankees Land Pablo Lopez in Blockbuster Trade

Again, the New York Yankees are expected to add at this year’s trade deadline, and they certainly should be in touch with the Minnesota Twins about starter Pablo López. López is currently on the injured list and hasn’t started since early June, but that means he will be fresh for a playoff push when he returns. The 29-year-old starter was the subject of many trade rumors before he went down with injury, but with the Twins likely to sell, now is a good time to get off López, who has a couple of years left of control. He is expected to return from his shoulder injury sometime in August.

MLB.com writer Bryan Hoch agrees with the sentiment that the Yankees should add pitching at this deadline:

“Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has a hefty shopping list heading into the Deadline. His top priority: pitching. Ideally, they would acquire one starting pitcher and at least two relievers. Easier said than done. They’ve already lost Gerrit Cole to Tommy John surgery, then saw Clarke Schmidt go down with the same in July. The front office is also eyeing an infielder, seeking an upgrade over the third base tandem of Oswald Peraza and Jorbit Vivas.”

While maybe López isn’t exactly the arm the Yankees are looking for, he’s had a solid 2025 campaign so far. In 60.2 innings, he has an ERA of 2.82 to go along with 60 strikeouts and a WHIP of 1.0171. López would easily slot into the Yankees rotation as a top-three option.

What Would the Yankees Have to Give Up?

Considering the New York Yankees would get López for at least one more season after this one, it may cost them some prospect capital and another arm they have at the moment. A good return package for the Minnesota Twins would include starter Cam Schittler, right-handed prospect Chase Hampton, and Jorbit Vivas.

The Twins get two MLB-ready type starters in this deal to replace López, and that’s exactly what Minnesota’s front office is likely to ask for.

For New York, a starting pitcher is at the top of their wish list, and expect them to make a big splash at the deadline, and for the injured López to be a potential option.
