As news began to spread about the tragic death of “The Cosby Show” star Malcolm-Jamal Warner, fans of the beloved actor have been flocking to his social media pages to express their disbelief and sorrow.

“I was just watching him on The Resident last night!” A distraught fan wrote. “Perfect example of how precious life is and how random and sudden death can be,” wrote another.

According to ABC News, the 54-year-old died in Costa Rica. Police say that he got swept up in a high current and drowned, with his official cause of death ruled as asphyxia. He was found on Sunday near a beach in Limon.

The actor was last seen at the Costa Rican airport on July 13th. In the picture, published by TMZ, Warner arrived on a flight from Atlanta and is casually chatting with a man next to him.


Malcolm-Jamal Warner Was On a Family Vacation

Warner leaves behind a wife and daughter, whom he had never publicly named, because he wanted to keep his personal life private. It’s unknown who he was with in Costa Rica, but reports claim he was on a family vacation.

In recent interviews, Warner spoke fondly of his family. He claimed that he had never wanted to get married or have children — until he met his wife.

“Our first date I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m probably not going to have kids,’” Warner said on the “Hot & Bothered” podcast. “And she said ‘I’m definitely having kids.’ So it was, ‘Great, we were not on the same page at all.’ This will not turn into anything; we could actually just be friends.”

He recalled that their “first date was September, our second date was October, we didn’t date again til November.” Because there were no expectations, the two were able to be completely honest and open with each other. They built a strong friendship.

“Five and a half months later, and we had never talked about kids since that first date,” he recalled. “Five and a half months later, I said, ‘What do you think about starting a family?’


Malcolm-Jamal Warner Was a Talented Musician, Poet, Actor, and Activist

Warner was best known for his portrayal of Theodore “Theo” Huxtable from “The Cosby Show. He earned a Primetime Emmy Nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. He starred in “Malcolm & Eddie” from 1996 to 2000. In 2018, he joined the cast of “The Resident.” However, he was also a musician and wrote poetry. In 2022, he won a Grammy Award for his Poetry Album “Hiding in Plain View.” Most recently, he began hosting the podcast “Not All Hood” with co-host Candace Kelley.

“The reason for the title is combating the narrative of black life, black culture that the media focuses on,” he told ABC7. “The whole concept is, ‘we’re not all hood, the black community is not a monolith. There are so many levels and lanes to the black community, and we want to have a space where we acknowledge and discuss all those lanes.”
