Beach reopens after ‘aggressive’ shark sighting near the Redondo Pier

A beach closure was lifted Monday evening after a shark “exhibiting aggressive behavior” was spotted just south of the Redondo Pier in Redondo Beach, according to lifeguards with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Lifeguards saw the shark eating a sea lion and evacuated the beach around 4:45 p.m., said Natalie Mohagen, an ocean lifeguard specialist with the Fire Department.

The beach was closed within a mile of the sighting until around 7 p.m., at which point officials on rescue boats and lifeguards at the beach said they hadn’t seen other shark activity in the area.

Lifeguards will continue to monitor the area now that it has reopened, Mohagen said.
