Rams Officially Sign Former UFL QB Ahead of Training Camp

The Los Angeles Rams are reuniting with a familiar face ahead of training camp, signing quarterback Dresser Winn.

This will be Winn’s third stint with Los Angeles. Winn initially joined the Rams in 2023 but was cut after the preseason. He was brought back that season after playing with the CFL’s Edmonton Elks but was waived again in the 2024 offseason.

Winn, 26, will be the fourth quarterback in camp for Los Angeles, joining Matthew Stafford, Jimmy Garoppolo, and Stetson Bennett.

This past season in the UFL, Winn completed 58.4% of his passes for 834 yards with three touchdowns and four interceptions for the Memphis Showboats.

When Did Dresser Winn Play for the Rams?

Winn was fairly underwhelming during his preseason cameo last August, throwing for just 72 yards on 9-of-16 passing against the Houston Texans. He was subsequently cut, as the third-string job went to Bennett, the former two-time national champion and Heisman finalist at Georgia.

Given his place on the depth chart, Winn again faces long odds of making the Rams’ final 53-man roster. He’ll continue to back up Bennett in the preseason while Stafford and Garoppolo prepare for Week 1.

Still, Winn should have a chance to prove himself, something he’s already started to do under coach Sean McVay. On top of that, the opportunity to learn from seasoned veterans like Stafford and Garoppolo should do wonders for his development.

What is the Rams’ Quarterback Situation?

Stafford has not played a preseason game since joining the Rams in 2021, and that’ll likely remain the case as he gears up for his age 37 season.

The two-time Pro Bowler, who signed a restructured contract worth up to $84 million this offseason, will be limited at the start of training camp due to a sore back.

McVay downplayed the injury, saying it’s something that Stafford has dealt with before. Still, there’s no need for Los Angeles to risk making it any worse.

“Matthew’s feeling good,” McVay said via NFL.com. “He had a little bit of soreness in his back that kind of crept up. He’s been throwing, feeling good, it’s not anything that’s necessarily new.”

NFL executives, coaches and coordinators recently ranked Stafford as the sixth-best quarterback in an anonymous survey by ESPN.

Garoppolo will presumably receive first-team snaps to start training camp, with Bennett and Winn sprinkled behind him.
