Dolphins Get Terrible Injury News on Ex-1st-Rounder to Begin Training Camp: Report

The Miami Dolphins didn’t enter NFL training camp with an overwhelming amount of depth at cornerback. The Dolphins appear about to have even less depth because of an injury to veteran Artie Burns.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Wednesday Burns left the team’s first training camp practice with a knee injury. Schefter tweeted the fear is Burns has suffered a torn ACL.

“Dolphins veteran CB Artie Burns, who injured his knee at practice today and left on crutches, is feared to have a torn ACL, per source,” Schefter tweeted. “Burns is now awaiting an MRI and second opinion to confirm.”

The Dolphins signed Burns as an unrestricted free agent on March 19. He spent the past three seasons with the Seattle Seahawks.

The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Burns at No. 25 overall in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He’s also played for the Chicago Bears during his professional career.

Over nine years in the NFL, Burns has posted 199 combined tackles, including eight for loss. He has also recorded 38 pass defenses and four interceptions in 90 games. Burns intercepted three of those passes as a rookie in 2016.

CB Artie Burns Could Be Out for the 2025 NFL Season

Although the veteran cornerback is awaiting confirmation, given Schefter’s report and the serious nature of Burns’ injury when it happened, it’s going to be surprising if he plays in 2025.

As a first-round pick with the Steelers, Burns was a bust. After three interceptions and 13 pass defenses as a rookie, he significantly struggled in 16 starts during his second season in 2017.

Since then, Burns has not started more than six games in a single NFL season again.

He signed with the Bears as an unrestricted free agent after his rookie contract expired. Following one season in Chicago, Burns was a free agent again.

The former first-rounder, though, has remained in the NFL as a quality depth cornerback. That’s what he was expected to be with the Dolphins this season.

According to the Pro Football Focus player grades, Burns was actually Seattle’s best defender in 2024. PFF awarded Burns an 89.6 coverage grade last season, which was the best of his career.
