The Kansas City Chiefs have gone to great lengths to rebuild their offensive line this past offseason.
The departure of All-Pro, Joe Thuney, was abated by the additions of tackles, Jaylon Moore and Josh Simmons.
But perhaps the bigger question mark for the offensive line will not be from the play of one of their new arrivals – the pair of whom will likely battle it out to start on the left hand side, although the other could potentially take the job of Jawaan Taylor, who is still dealing with a knee injury suffered at the back end of last season.
Instead, it could come from one of their returning players, Kingsley Suamataia, who the Chiefs drafted late in the second round back in 2024. Whilst his play at left tackle did not do enough to earn him the job full time, the team are hoping that a move to guard will make the most out of his capabilities.
With the departure of Thuney, the left guard job is Suamataia’s to lose. And if he does not play well enough to establish himself as a legitimate starter in camp, there are no very solid options behind him, with the only alternative with starting experience being Mike Caliendo, who did not play well in 2024, garnering only a 49.0 grade from Pro Football Focus on the year.
Dolphins Guard Could Make Sense For The Chiefs
So in this trade proposal, the Chiefs get insurance on their former second rounder in the form of Miami Dolphins guard, Liam Eichenberg.
Eichenberg has had a very up-and-down four years in Miami, and his grading out from media outlets like PFF has not always been so generous. Even last year, Eichenberg only slightly outperformed Caliendo, getting a 53.1 grade. And whilst he has fared a little better on the inside than when played outside at tackle, he is not a long term solution.
But that is not what insurance is for. Eichenberg is cheap – he is on just a one year $2.25 million deal – and has substantial starting experience in the league, having 46 starts under his belt over the pst four seasons.
Would he revolutionize Kansas City’s offense – no. Would he be a viable option in case of injury, or poor camp performance from Suamataia, absolutely.
What Would Eichenberg Cost The Chiefs?
It is hard to give an exact number, but the former Notre Dame man does not seem to feature heavily in the team’s plans moving forward, given that they bought in free agents, James Daniels and Daniel Brunskill, alongside second round guard, Jonah Savaiinaea.
Now fourth in the pecking order, it is not like Eichenberg is indispensable for a Miami team that could be looking to shift players anyway, not being in a true win-now state at present moment.
The Dolphins won’t let him go for nothing, but even a small offer could get the deal over the line in what would be a win-win intra-AFC deal.
