Sean McVay Confronts ‘Slow Starts’ At Rams Training Camp

The NFL’s opening weeks of the regular season bear outsized importance, especially for teams like the Los Angeles Rams with legitimate playoff ambitions.

Sean McVay has made it clear about how the Rams begin seasons, and the ninth-year head coach isn’t dwelling on the past. The team is all about moving forward.

“I could give you reasons for why those last two seasons started the way they did,” McVay told Kay Adams on Friday. “I don’t think they’re related, but ultimately, every year is a new year. I think when you talk about going into Year nine, you have a real appreciation perspective. When you really say the amount of time in between, the usual turnover, the way that other teams adjust and adapt.. Every single year is a new year. It’s about how this team comes together. How do we shape the way that we work. The energy we have, and what kind of mindset we establish in the midst of inevitable adversity, and ebbs and flows that a season brings.”

The Rams haven’t posted a winning record through the first four games of a season since 2021. In both 2022 and 2023, sluggish beginnings contributed to early standings pressure and injuries to key players.

That’s why this summer, McVay is placing a renewed emphasis on ramping up both physical preparation and mental readiness for the Rams — while carefully managing the team’s veteran core.

On Thursday, the Rams rested several key veterans including wide receiver Davante Adams, tight end Tyler Higbee, and right tackle Rob Havenstein. All three are entering their 10th NFL season or beyond, and McVay said they’ll be on a consistent rotation to limit wear and tear.

Matthew Stafford is also following a modified schedule as he deals with back soreness. McVay said Stafford is expected to return for Monday’s practice — the first day in pads — and will continue to be eased in from there. The Rams are keeping a close eye on his workload as he enters his 17th season.

Younger Talent Showing Signs of Growth

As veterans get back into the swing of practice, there’s younger talent making noise. Puka Nacua has stood out for his consistency and energy, drawing rave reviews from both teammates and coaches.

He hauled in multiple contested catches during team drills, prompting 2024 first-round pick Jared Verse to call him “a psychopath” for how relentless he’s been on the field.

The offense has found an early rhythm, with McVay balancing the attack between Stafford, Adams and the deep rushing attack led by Kyren Williams.

Williams Focused Despite Rams Contract Talks

Williams is entering the final year of his rookie deal, has not let contract negotiations affect his approach. He reported to camp on time and has taken on a full practice workload. Williams is expected to be the Rams’ RB1 of the future, after rushing 1,299 yards and 14 touchdowns last season.

“I want to play for the Rams,” Williams said this week, per ESPN’s Sarah Barshop. “That’s where I see my future. I trust it’ll get worked out.”

With padded practices set to begin Monday, McVay knows the real test is still weeks away. But the urgency is already being felt.
