Packers Sign Rookie CB, Shrine Bowl Standout to Fill Camp Roster

The Green Bay Packers are adding some more cornerback depth to their roster after making it through their first several practices of 2025 NFL training camp.

According to the team’s official transaction wire, the Packers signed rookie cornerback Garnett Hollis Jr. on Saturday in a pair of roster moves that filled their 90-man roster — which is technically a 91-man roster counting their international player designation.

Hollis had initially signed with the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent after the 2025 NFL draft in the spring, but the team waived him just five days after signing him. Now, the six-foot, 199-pound rookie will have an opportunity to enter the fray for the Packers and compete for a depth spot in their largely unsettled cornerback rotation.

The Packers also officially announced they claimed running back Israel Abanikana off the waiver wire from the San Francisco 49ers. NFL insider Aaron Wilson had reported Thursday that Green Bay had won its claim for Abanikanda, a 2023 fifth-round pick.

Garnett Hollis Had Some Coverage Issues in 2024

Hollis is an intriguing name for the Packers’ cornerback competition, largely because of the mixed results that he produced through his four-season career at the FBS level.

In three seasons at Northwestern, Hollis recorded 78 tackles with four tackles for loss, two interceptions and six pass deflections. He also earned a reputation as a formidable run defender, earning run-defense grades of 85.0 or higher from Pro Football Focus in all three of his seasons.

After transferring to West Virginia in 2024, though, Hollis struggled in pass coverage, allowing an opposing passer rating of 129.4 and giving up five touchdowns, per PFF.

Fortunately for Hollis, he received an invitation to the 2025 East-West Shrine Bowl in January that allowed him to revitalize his NFL prospects. He caught some scouting attention after standing out in the showcase’s practice, then further impressed scouts with his 4.5-second clocking in the 40-yard dash at his pro day — good for his size.

Whether Hollis has what it takes to crack the Packers’ cornerback rotation remains to be seen, but at least the 23-year-old has his foot in the door at the right time of year.

Micah Robinson’s Return From Injury Bolsters CBs

The Packers received another boost for their cornerback competition earlier this week when they activated seventh-round rookie Micah Robinson off the active/physically unable to perform (PUP) list after he passed his physical last Wednesday, July 23.

Robinson had landed on the PUP list when he reported for training camp on July 18, but he didn’t miss much time with his activation coming on the first day of practice. That’s good news for the roster-hopeful youngster, as he should have a decent chance to contend for a depth spot in the Packers’ cornerback rotation if he has a strong camp.

Robinson played just one season at the FBS level with Tulane in 2024, registering 34 tackles, two interceptions (one pick-six) and six pass deflections over his 14 games. He did, however, clock a 4.42-second time in the 40-yard dash at his pro day this spring.

Robinson must adjust to the speed of the NFL and prove that he can also contribute on special teams if he wants a place on the Packers’ initial 53-man roster. If he manages to prove himself in the preseason, though, a depth role is a realistic possibility for him.
