President Donald Trump jetted off to Scotland this week to negotiate with European leaders and spend time on his company’s golf courses — and ended up sparking some furious debate over whether a video shows him “cheating” during a round.
Video emerged showing Trump riding on a cart as he approaches a green. A caddie walking alongside the cart darts ahead to the edge of a bunker and drops a new ball into the rough, which Trump then approaches.
While the video cuts out before showing whether Trump actually hits the ball, many online saw it as proof that the caddie was helping the president cheat by shaving some strokes off of his score. But others familiar with the game thought there could be another, more straightforward explanation for the dropped ball.
Golf Fans Split on Donald Trump Golf Video
Many people claimed that the video showed Trump cheating — to the point that it became a viral trend on X.
“High resolution video of Trumpâs caddie placing a golf ball for him at his Turnberry Golf Resort in Scotland. Trump approached to play like it was no big deal,” one post on X noted.
But others offered alternative explanations, with some claiming that Trump was preparing to take a drop and a penalty shot and others suggesting that the caddie was just moving along a friendly, non-competitive round of golf.
“As someone who has played links golf. This is what caddies do,” one person wrote in a post on X. “This is a stress free round of golf and theyâre probably playing ready golf so the caddie threw a ball down cause they probably couldnât find it and wanted to keep play moving.”
“Assuming his ball was out of play or in the shrubs, his caddie was simply putting one out for him to play. Pretty standard,” added another.
Some golf fans noted that senior golfers often do not hit from the bunker, suggesting the caddie was preparing for his next shot. Trump, who is returning to the United States after the four-day trip, has not addressed the cheating allegation.
Past Allegations of Cheating From Donald Trump
Trump has long endured allegations that he cheats on the golf course, with longtime Sports Illustrated writer Rick Reilly even compiling the allegations in a book. Reilly found that Trump took liberties on the course and even set up his club’s tournament so he always won the annual championship.
âLots of guys said he wasnât even in town when some championships were decided,” Reilly claimed in 2019, via the Guardian. “He claimed to have won a tournament in New Jersey when he was actually in Philly.”
Reilly added that he challenged Trump to a match to test his abilities, but the then-president didn’t respond to the offer.
âIâve offered Trump a $100,000 charity bet to play him. He has not responded,” Reilly said. “Iâd bet my house I can beat him as long as there is a camera on both of us but heâs not going to play me.”
