Broncos President Makes Major Statement on New Stadium Plans

The Denver Broncos‘ home is not even 25 years old, but the team is reportedly working on a deal for a new stadium.

Still, Broncos president Damani Leech pushed back on the team’s reported plans of buying land to build a new stadium and told reporters over the weekend the team had not decided to put together a new stadium or renovate the 24-year-old Empower Field at Mile High in Denver.

Leech addressed reporters over the weekend to set the record straight about the Broncos’ potential future home.

What Did Damani Leech Say About a New Stadium?

Reports have come up recently about the Broncos purchasing land in the Burnham Yard district of Denver, which is adjacent to where their current stadium is located. Yet, Leech shared any news of a new stadium is premature.

“[We’re] certainly aware of all the media coverage here recently,” Leech told reporters Saturday. “We share in the excitement and interest that it’s generated among the fans. We appreciate it.

“It’s good for us to learn what some of the fans say and hear in response to some of those media reports. But, no, I wouldn’t say any decision is made.”

The Broncos may have started the process toward their next home, based on published reports, but Leech insists they are only at the very beginning of a multi-term process.

“It’s a very comprehensive, long-term process that we’re going through,” Leech said. “We’re trying to be very deliberate about it. Still no determination about whether it’s a new stadium or whether it’s a renovation or the location that it’s in, a lot of work to go there.”

Despite the reported land purchases by the Broncos nearby their home, Leech stated the team has not picked a site for a new stadium or even where they would like to build a new stadium.

“We have not made any decisions about preferred sites,” Leech said. “What you’ve heard from us is really at a city level, so city conversations, city viewing, Denver, Aurora, Lone Tree. Beyond that the levels and details there, no decisions have been made.”

What Did Damani Leech Say About the Denver Mayor?

Leech’s comments threw cold water on the red-hot Broncos stadium scuttlebutt from about two weeks ago. Those rumors were also enflamed by public comments from Denver mayor Mike Johnston to the Denver Post.

“I’ve said since I ran [for mayor] ‘Over my dead body do the Broncos leave Denver,’ and so I’m committed to that today,” Johnston told the Post. “I feel like we have the chance to do something special, and we’re going to work hard at it to get it done, and I feel like we’re close, but I think that’s all I can say now.”

“Certainly, respect the excitement and enthusiasm of the mayor,” Leech said. “He’s a big fan of the Broncos … But also, I think both the mayor and governor have been sincere in wanting to do what’s right for the Broncos. They understand the role the Broncos play in this community. So, I’ve had very good conversations with them.

“That being said, we’re not going to put a timetable on it. This is a 30-, 40-, 50-year decision that we don’t want to rush by a matter of weeks here or there. We’re going to continue to do our due diligence until we feel like we’re in a position to make the right decision.”
