Chargers Announce Starting Quarterback for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game

ootball is back. For the first time since the Super Bowl, there will be a real live football game played this week when the Los Angeles Chargers take on the Detroit Lions in the annual Hall of Fame Game on July 31. The official start of the preseason, both teams will take the field for the first time in a game situation as their quest for a Super Bowl title commences.

And with the game only a few days away, the Chargers announced who their starting quarterback would be– Trey Lance, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 draft. Bouncing around the league since the San Francisco 49ers traded him ahead of the 2023 season, Lance signed a one-year deal with the Chargers hoping that head coach Jim Harbaugh can revive his career.

The plan for Lance

Very rarely do you see starters play, let alone suite up, for the Hall of Fame game. Instead, the game is as a chance for rookies and fringe players to prove their worth and show that they deserve a roster spot. In Lance’s case, he is competing with Taylor Heinicke and rookie DJ Uiagalelei to be the backup to Justin Herbert.

And after Harbaugh announced that he was the starter for Thursday’s game, he said that Lance would play the entire first half and part of the third quarter– hoping that a lot of playing time will lead to a better assessment of Lance’s skills. Once a highly touted prospect coming out of North Dakota State, Lance has gotten minimal playing time through his first four seasons in the NFL and has been unable to reach the threshold that comes with being a top five draft pick.

Harbaugh Reveals the Plans for Other Players

In addition to Lance getting substantial playing time in the game on July 31, Harbaugh also revealed his plan for other players who are expected to have bigger roles for the Chargers this season. Rookie running back Omarion Hampton, who the Chargers drafted in the first round of this year’s draft, will play– although it is still unknown exactly how much he will play.

As for fourth year pro and 2022 first round draft pick, Zion Johnson, he will start at center for the Chargers in the Hall of Fame game– but will only play in a few drives before coming out. Wide receivers Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston— the presumed starters– will not play in the game and will rest instead.
