The standoff between the Golden State Warriors and Jonathan Kuminga is heating up. With trade talks gaining traction and tensions rising, Kuminga made his stance clear today with a sharp message on Instagram.
In a Story shared earlier, he posted a photo of himself sitting next to his agent, captioned: “I’ll bet on myself all day.” He ended it with a simple tag: #JustKnow.
The post comes as the Warriors’ contract negotiations with Kuminga have reportedly stalled. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania and Anthony Slater, Kuminga believes the franchise has “stunted his growth and strung him along” throughout his first four years in the league. The report revealed that the Warriors offered a two-year, $45 million deal with a team option and no trade veto clause—terms Kuminga’s camp sees as giving up too much control.
Golden State’s Offer Adds to Stalemate
Kuminga is reportedly looking for a longer-term deal closer to $90 million over four years. The Suns and Kings have both emerged as potential landing spots, with deals in that range reportedly on the table. But Golden State appears hesitant to part ways with the 22-year-old forward unless it’s on their terms.
The Warriors’ proposed contract structure is designed to be tradable by January 15. In theory, that would allow any acquiring team to decline the team option and sign Kuminga to a long-term extension. Still, the lack of trade protections and short-term nature of the offer has created friction. If accepted, Kuminga would be the fourth-highest-paid Warrior next season, behind only the team’s veteran stars.
Charania and Slater described the dispute as “largely about control.” Kuminga’s camp sees Golden State’s offer as yet another move that limits his future flexibility and undervalues his growth.
Where the Warriors Go From Here
While the Phoenix Suns and Sacramento Kings remain in the mix, it’s unclear if the Warriors will ultimately pull the trigger on a sign-and-trade. Some reports suggest the team may be nearing the end of negotiations and could opt to pause all trade talks entirely, potentially keeping Kuminga on his current deal through the season.
The regular season is still months away, but this situation could come to a head long before tip-off. Kuminga wants a bigger role, long-term security, and a fresh start. The Warriors want cap flexibility and team control.
At some point, something has to give.
