Byron Buxton Makes Thoughts on Twins’ Trade Deadline Fire Sale Extremely Clear

The Minnesota Twins were one of the busiest teams in the majors at the trade deadline, as they decided to embrace their status as a seller by unloading several key players to contending teams. One guy who stayed put was outfielder Byron Buxton, but it sounds like there’s no place in the world he’d rather be than Minnesota.

While his name was popping up in trade rumors ahead of the deadline, Buxton made it clear he wasn’t going anywhere, as he has a no-trade clause in his contract. Some folks wondered whether that would change now that the Twins’ roster has been depleted, but according to the man himself, he is still committed to his longtime team moving forward.

Byron Buxton Not Giving Up on the Twins Just Yet

Buxton came up in the Twins organization as a superstar prospect after being selected with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 MLB Draft. He’s never truly put his entire game together for long stretches of time, but Buxton has become a critical piece of Minnesota’s outfield, as he’s been with the team for the past 11 seasons.

Injuries have largely deterred Buxton’s career, as he’s only played in over 100 games twice in his career. Ahead of the deadline, Buxton hit the injured list with a ribcage injury, disrupting what has been one of the most complete seasons of his career. In 85 games, Buxton is hitting .282 with 23 home runs, 59 RBIs and 17 stolen bases.

At his best, Buxton is a five-tool player, and with the Twins potentially selling at the deadline, it wasn’t a surprise to see his name pop up in rumors. Now, Buxton is headlining a team that largely just destroyed his roster, but he doesn’t seem to care, as he reaffirmed his commitment to Minnesota, even after their busy trade deadline.

“Nothing’s changed,” Buxton said, per Bobby Nightengale of The Minnesota Star Tribune. “It’s just part of baseball. It’s the business side of it. Just because we go through these tough roads or whatever, it is what it is. We’ll be better once we get on the other end of it and figure things out a little bit more. The end of the season we’ll talk a little bit more, but I ain’t going nowhere.”

Twins Find Themselves in a Sudden Rebuild

Buxton isn’t exactly a spring chicken anymore, as he will turn 32 years old in December, but the Twins are going to use him as a building block moving forward. If he can set a proper example for the next generation of players coming through Minnesota, he could help lay the foundation for their next great team.

It’s always going to be tough for a small-market team like the Twins to win, and in order to do so, they need to find stars who will remain with them for the long-term future. Buxton appears to be one of those guys, and while things aren’t looking great right now, that doesn’t mean he’s going to switch up and look to move to a different team in the future.
