Cameron Young Makes History at Wyndham as Playoff Race Heats Up

Cameron Young has been on the verge of his first PGA Tour title for quite some time. Now, as he heads into Sunday at the 2025 Wyndham Championship with a commanding five-shot lead, the 28-year-old American has never been closer. After carding a bogey-free 65 in Saturday’s third round, Young moved to 20-under-par for the tournament, setting the stage for a potentially career-defining moment at Sedgefield Country Club.

Despite multiple runner-up finishes in recent seasons, Young has remained a notable figure on Tour due to his explosive tee-to-green game and consistency in big events. But until now, the top spot on the leaderboard late on a Saturday has eluded him. On Day 3 in Greensboro, he seized the moment, riding a four-hole birdie run on the front nine and delivering a composed finish on the back to put significant distance between himself and the rest of the field.

Unrelenting Performance Puts Young in Prime Position

Young’s third-round performance was nothing short of clinical. He opened with steady pars before catching fire with birdies on holes 3 through 6. A long curling putt on the par-4 4th gave him early momentum, followed by a pinpoint wedge on the par-5 5th that set up an easy two-putt birdie. By the turn, Young had already separated himself from most of the pack.

While many contenders struggled to keep pace on a firm and fast Sedgefield layout, Young displayed maturity beyond his years. He navigated tight pin placements with precision and converted key putts, particularly a crucial birdie at the par-3 15th and another at the short par-4 17th. His bogey-free 65 was emblematic of a player in full control of his game, both mentally and physically.

Young’s 20-under-par total broke the tournament’s 54-hole scoring record, previously held by Henrik Stenson. That statistic alone highlights the caliber of golf he’s played through three rounds, and his five-shot cushion going into Sunday marks the largest of his career.

“I’m starting in a nice spot, so I’m just looking to try to beat second place by as many as I can,” Young said. “That’s been my mindset from the first tee on Thursday and that’s what I’m going to try to do tomorrow.”

Nico Echavarria and the Chasing Pack Face Steep Challenge

Trailing Young is Colombia’s Nico Echavarria, who sits at 15-under-par after a strong back nine helped him climb into solo second. Echavarria will need a near-flawless Sunday round and some help from the leader to close the gap. Behind him, a group of players at 13-under and 12-under includes veterans and long shots alike, but all face the daunting task of catching a player whose game appears peaking at exactly the right time.

POS PLAYER SCORE THRU
1 C. Young -20 F
2 N. Echavarria -15 F
T3 C. Kirk -12 F
T3 A. Rai -12 F
T3 M. Meissner -12 F
6 J. Koivun (a) -11 F

The Wyndham Championship also serves as the final event of the PGA Tour’s regular season, adding another layer of intensity to Sunday’s round. Players hovering near the top-70 cutoff in the FedEx Cup standings, including the likes of Rickie Fowler, Adam Scott, and Shane Lowry, will be grinding for points as much as the trophy. However, the spotlight remains firmly on Young, who could vault significantly in the rankings with a win.

Pressure Mounts, but Young’s Breakthrough Feels Imminent

Young’s journey to this point has been one marked by promise, patience, and persistence. Since turning pro in 2019, he’s logged seven runner-up finishes, including notable showings at major championships and elevated events. Still, the first victory has remained elusive … until now.

Should he hold on Sunday, Young would not only claim his maiden PGA Tour title but also send a clear message ahead of the FedEx Cup Playoffs and the Ryder Cup selection cycle. A win at Wyndham would validate his talent and quiet any lingering doubts about his ability to close.

Of course, golf is rarely predictable. Final-round pressure has upended many commanding leads before, and Sedgefield’s final stretch offers plenty of opportunities, and hazards. But if Saturday’s performance is any indication, Young appears ready to step into the winner’s circle.
