The Boston Bruins were one of the worst teams in the NHL last season, and in the offseason, Boston hasn’t made many major moves.
The Bruins did add some solid NHL players, but didn’t add any star players to try and help them get over the hump. With that, many have wondered if Boston would start a rebuild and could trade the likes of David Pastrnak and Charlie McAvoy.
Yet, for Pastrnak, who is the Bruins’ top offensive player, he isn’t paying attention to what the team is doing and instead, is focused on improving his own game.
“Well, that’s a pretty good first question,” Pastrnak said to Czech outlet Hokej.cz about Boston not adding a top-line player. “I don’t really think about it. I’m just focusing on being well prepared for the season. We signed a lot of experienced players who will help us on the ice and in the locker room with leadership. It’s been a long summer, so I’m looking forward to it starting up again.”
Pastrnak is entering the third year of his eight-year, $90 million deal and is focused on helping Boston win games. However, the Bruins’ offense will have to be led by the Czech forward, as the Bruins’ major offseason moves were adding Viktor Arvidsson and Tanner Jeannot.
Pastrnak recorded 43 goals and 63 assists for 106 points in 82 games.
Pastrnak Motivated to Help Turn The Bruins Around
Boston finished last season with a record of 33-39-10 and had the fifth-worst record in the NHL.
After last year’s disappointment, Pastrnak says he is focused on helping the Bruins get back to being a playoff contender.
“Last season was a huge disappointment for all of us. Everyone who was there is even more motivated to turn it around next year,” Pastrnak said. “That’s why we play hockey, it’s special for every player. That will be our goal.”
Pastrnak will be a leader on and off the ice for the Bruins, but isn’t the captain. Even though he doesn’t have the C, Pastrnak says his goal is to be the best he can be and help Boston win games.
“Nothing changes. It wouldn’t change if I had the C or McAvoy. We’re all in this together, we still have guys in the locker room who won the Stanley Cup. I know I’m a leader and Boston’s game will depend on me. We have to continue to work together, improve and help the young guys,” Pastrnak added.
Pastrnak is a four-time NHL All-Star.
Bruins GM Wanted to Make Team Tougher
Although Boston was one of the worst teams in the NHL last season, the Bruins didn’t make any major moves.
However, after the first wave of free agency, the Bruins’ general manager, Don Sweeney, says he wanted to make the team tougher to play against.
“At times last year, even when we had our group, we were an easy out. I can’t stand for that,” Sweeney said. “So we are going to reestablish that.”
Boston’s notable offseason moves were adding Jeannot, Mikey Eyssimont, Arvidsson, and Sean Kuraly.
