Kelly Clarkson nearly starred in a family-themed season of “The Voice” alongside Reba McEntire, Blake Shelton, and Gwen Stefani before her life took a heartbreaking turn.
According to a production insider, the idea was floated in 2019, when Clarkson was still married to Brandon Blackstockâthe son of McEntireâs ex-husband Narvel Blackstock. The plan was scrapped a year later as Clarksonâs marriage unraveled, and the dynamics between the stars became too complicated.
A ‘Family’ Season of ‘The Voice’ That Never Happened
âThere were once talks of doing a family-themed season [of âThe Voiceâ]⦠around 2019,â a source told the U.S. Sun. âThe coaches would’ve been Reba, Kelly, Gwen, and Blake. The family theme being Kelly was Reba’s daughter-in-law and Kelly and Blake having the same manager at the time.â
The insider added that âKelly and Blake were basically best buds at the timeâ and that Gwen and Blakeâs romance added âanother family element.â
âThese four are very intertwined and have genuine connections,â the source continued. âBut then Kelly began to go through her divorce and the dynamics got too messy, so it fizzled out. It would’ve been a fun season though.â
McEntire, 70, was married to Narvel from 1989 to 2015. After their split, Brandon and his brother Shelby continued to call her âmom.â
Clarkson and McEntire maintained a strong bond as well, frequently performing together and supporting one anotherâs projects.
Shelton, 49, has been a fixture on “The Voice” since its 2011 debut. Stefani, 55, joined in 2014, followed by Clarkson in 2018. McEntire became a full-time coach in season 24 but had served as Sheltonâs battle advisor as early as season 1.
Kelly Clarkson Supported Brandon Blackstock Through His Illness, Despite Their Nasty Split
Clarkson filed for divorce from Brandon in June 2020, citing âirreconcilable differences.â Their split was contentious, involving battles over custody, property, and finances. The divorce was finalized in March 2022, with Clarkson ordered to pay her ex over $1.3 million in a lump sum, plus $45,601 in monthly child support and $115,000 per month in spousal support.
Despite their rocky past, Clarkson privately cared for Brandon in his final months as he battled melanoma cancer, according to multiple sources who spoke to Page Six. âDespite their difficult divorce, heâs still the man she loved and still her kidsâ father,â one insider said.
On August 6, Clarkson canceled the remainder of her Las Vegas residency dates due to Brandonâs âserious illness.â The following morning, Starstruck Entertainment announced that Brandon had died at age 48. Clarkson has not yet publicly commented on his passing.
