Season 3 of HBOâs âThe Gilded Ageâ wrapped up with romance, power shifts, shocking revelations â and a devastating cliffhanger. The finale tied up some storylines in heartwarming ways while opening the door to new conflicts, leaving fans relieved the series has already been renewed for season 4. From surprise proposals to high-society tensions, the cast is sharing behind-the-scenes details and teasing where the drama might go next.
A Season Finale Full of Love, Surprises, and New Beginnings
The episode picked up where last weekâs suspense left off â George Russell survived being shot thanks to Dr. Kirklandâs quick work, but his brush with death left him questioning his life. Elsewhere, Marian and Larry reconciled and got re-engaged, Oscar suggested a mutually beneficial marriage to Enid, and Agnes finally accepted Adaâs leadership in the Van Rhijn household. Gladys revealed sheâs expecting the Dukeâs child, Bridget was romanced by Jack, and Mrs. Astor publicly welcomed her daughter at a glittering party.
One of the most emotional moments came when William proposed to Peggy during a Black ball â a scene that star Denée Benton says had been a dream for years.
âOne of the biggest dreams that [co-executive producer Dr. Erica Armstrong Dunbar] and I had was getting there to be a Black ball in the show,â Benton told TVLine. âFor all of it to culminate in Peggy getting this moment of being chosen in all of her beauty and vulnerability â itâs just a feast.â
Her co-star Jordan Donica said filming the scene was âreally sweet,â adding, âThey [crew members] were like, âThat reminded me of when I proposed to my wife.â And then I cried watching it back.â
For Taissa Farmiga, Gladysâs sudden transition from maiden to wife to expectant mother was bittersweet.
âI wish there was a tiny bit more time⦠maybe join a charity or something,â Farmiga admitted. âBut Iâm ready to do my duty. Itâll be interesting to see how she is as a mother in the 1880s.â
Tensions and Heartbreak Set the Stage for ‘The Gilded Age’ Season 4
While several couples found happiness in the finale, George and Bertha Russellâs marriage took a dark turn. George told Bertha he could no longer allow her to use their children in her social maneuvering, declaring, âIâm ruthless in business, not with the people I love.â When she asked if he was coming back, he responded coldly, âNot until we know what we want.â
Morgan Spector, who plays George, believes the tension could be a good thing for the series.
âBecause we know how good this couple can be together, it would be fascinating to see them spend a season figuring out how to get back to each other,â Spector said.
Carrie Coon, who plays Bertha, is far more confident in her characterâs determination.
âSheâs not going to give up,â Coon also told TV Line.
Christine Baranski also reflected on the touching moment between Agnes and Ada, calling it âwell-earnedâ after so much sibling tension. âIt says so much in such a short amount of time,â she said.
With reconciliations, breakups, power shifts, and pregnancies all in play, season 4 of âThe Gilded Ageâ is shaping up to be one of the most emotionally charged yet.
