Johnny Depp May Return for Pirates of the Caribbean Sequel Says Producer

The pirate’s life might not be over for Johnny Depp. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has revealed that he has spoken with the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star about a possible return to the high seas for the franchise’s long-discussed sixth film. While nothing is official yet, Bruckheimer says the door is open — if the right script comes along.

In a new interview with EW, Bruckheimer confirmed that conversations have taken place with Depp about reprising his iconic role as Captain Jack Sparrow. “If he likes the way the part’s written, I think he would do it,” Bruckheimer said. “It’s all about what’s on the page, as we all know.”

The last film in the series, “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” was released in 2017 and featured Depp alongside Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom, and Keira Knightley. Plans for a sixth installment have been in motion since 2019, but progress slowed after the 2023 Hollywood strikes. The current script is being worked on by franchise scribe Ted Elliot and “The Last of Us” co-creator Craig Mazin, with Jeff Nathanson, who penned the fifth film, also contributing.

Bruckheimer has praised Nathanson’s work, noting that the third act is “amazing” but that the first and second acts still need refining before production can move forward.

Bruckheimer Balances Reboot Plans With Jack Sparrow’s Legacy

Bruckheimer has said the new film will serve as a reboot of the “Pirates” series, yet he remains hopeful that Jack Sparrow will make an appearance. “It’s a reboot, but if it was up to me, he would be in it,” Bruckheimer previously stated. “I love him. He’s a good friend. He’s an amazing artist, and he’s a unique look. He created Captain Jack. That was not on the page; that was him doing a little Pepé Le Pew and Keith Richards.”

Depp’s potential return would mark a significant change from his 2022 testimony during the highly publicized defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard, where he stated he would not return to the franchise “for $300 million and a million alpacas.” Bruckheimer’s comments suggest a willingness on both sides to revisit the collaboration.

Since 2022, Depp has focused on independent projects outside Hollywood. A return to “Pirates of the Caribbean” would be his first blockbuster major studio role in years — and a chance to once again bring Captain Jack Sparrow’s unpredictable charm back to the big screen and fans around the world.
