Jets’ Aaron Glenn Reveals Injury Details About Veteran QB

As the New York Jets continue trekking along their preseason slate, a familiar face will be on the sideline. The club’s oldest and most-experienced player is nursing an injury to wrap up training camp.

Speaking to the media on August 12, head coach Aaron Glenn provided an update on quarterback Tyrod Taylor.

Tyrod Taylor Undergoes Knee Procedure & Will Miss Preseason

Glenn revealed that Taylor had a procedure done on his knee. He describes the surgery as a “minor scope,” which is confirmed by national media reports referring to it as arthroscopic in nature.

“So Tyrod had a procedure, which we all know,” Glenn said. “He’s still going through his protocol as far as his rehab. We’ll see exactly where he is in the next couple of weeks. I don’t think he’ll be playing in the preseason, but hopefully he’ll be ready for Week 1.”

A procedure like this shouldn’t necessarily come as a huge surprise. A week before announcing the surgery, Glenn said Taylor “had a knee” and explained that the team wanted him to be 100% for the start of the regular season.

“Yeah, listen, we all know he’s an older player,” Glenn said. “Obviously, when you get to that point, it’s a wear-and-tear. We want to make sure we get it taken care of so he can be ready for us when the season starts. I don’t see it as a long-term, but I don’t want to just stamp that right now. But I’m sure it’s not.”

A rehab timeline of a few weeks would have Taylor in line to be available soon for the Jets. Their regular-season slate kicks off on September 7 against the Pittsburgh Steelers and continues with Sunday games against the Buffalo Bills on September 14 and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on September 21.

New York will hope Taylor misses no or very little time to begin the year. Entering his 15th season, he likely didn’t need many preseason reps anyway.

Update on Jets’ Quarterback Room During Taylor’s Absence

Luckily for the Jets, Taylor isn’t their starter. Justin Fields remains healthy after a brief injury scare earlier in training camp. He shined in the team’s preseason opener against the Green Bay Packers, giving fans a glimpse of what could be coming during the regular season. Fields, a dynamic athlete with rushing upside, will look to raise the franchise’s floor after a measly 5-12 2024 campaign.

It’s who takes Taylor’s place as Fields’ backup for the time being that is most intriguing. The Jets have two primary options to do so: Adrian Martinez and Brady Cook.

Martinez got the bulk of the work versus Green Bay, completing 11 of his 16 pass attempts for 152 yards and a touchdown. He also toted the ball twice for 13 rushing yards. He’s listed behind Fields and Taylor on the unofficial depth chart. Cook, an undrafted free agent out of Missouri, went 6-for-8 with 62 passing yards and one rush for a loss of five yards.

Whomever the Jets choose, that’s a sneaky-important role to fill. Glenn is on record stating how confident he is in Taylor, but this is a new ballgame. All it takes is one play to thrust one of the young pieces into action in games that, while not season-altering, do indeed matter.
