Michael Cromie will serve as the fill-in caddie for Scottie Scheffler at the PGA Tour’s BMW Championship, the second leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs.
Here’s what you need to know about Scottie Scheffler’s fill-in caddie, Michael Cromie.
1. He’s a full-time PGA Tour caddie
Cromie is on Scheffler’s bag for the BMW Championship because Scheffler’s full-time caddie, Ted Scott, is home tending to a personal matter. Scott actually had to leave before the fourth round of the previous week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship to get home to his family, and that left Scheffler in a trickier spot. The world No. 1 called on good friend and PGA Tour chaplain Brad Payne to work that final round, and Payne shepherded Scheffler to a 3-under, falling just short of the playoffs.
This time, with more notice, he was able to get Cromie, who is the full-time caddie for six-time winner Chris Kirk. Cromie and Kirk narrowly missed advancing to the BMW Championship. The top 50 at the St. Jude advanced, and Kirk finished 51st.
Cromie and Kirk have been working together full time since 2020, and he does have some experience at Caves Valley Golf Club. Kirk finished 8-under in 48th place the last time the Tour was at the Maryland course.
2. Cromie was a great player himself
Like most caddies on Tour, Cromie had a prolific playing career that stopped just short of the professional game. He played college golf at the University of Georgia where he had a prolific career. He was an All-SEC and All-American selection in 2014. While in college, he also got to play some of the world’s most famous — and exclusive — courses, like Augusta National Golf Club and Cypress Point. He also won the North and South Amateur at Pinehurst.
3. Cromie helped right ship for Kirk’s putting
Kirk’s putting has been up and down since his return to the Tour, but in late 2024, it was Cromie who helped get him on the right course for the playoff push. As Kirk revealed, Cromie worked with an Odyssey rep to design a new putter for his boss.
The duo put the flatstick in play for the playoffs last season, and Kirk ranked sixth in the field in putting at the 2024 St. Jude which he needed. Kirk finished 50th and just barely got through to the BMW where he top-10’d to get into the Tour Championship. Kirk made $600,000 for the two tournaments, and he got into all the 2025 signature events, making just shy of $3 million for the season before being eliminated.
It might be time to go back to the drawing board, though: Kirk finished 146th in strokes gained putting this season.
4. Cromie’s on-course work includes (literal) homework
Life on the road is tough, and while spending your days on the golf course might seem ideal, it can get a little bit boring. That’s why as part of Cromie’s role with Kirk, he comes prepared with trivia for his guy to do during practice rounds and tournaments.
No word on whether any sort of trivia was included in Cromie’s deal to work with Scheffler.
5. Cromie is a family man away from the course
Cromie and his wife Collins have two kids: Gunner and Shaw. The two were married in September of 2017 and live in Georgia.
