Authorities have identified a pedestrian who was hit by two vehicles and killed on an East Bay highway last week.
The collisions Aug. 6 on eastbound state Highway 4 happened near the Somersville Road exit and killed 76-year-old Ricardo Escobar. The Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office released Escobar’s identity publicly but said he did not have a known city of residence.
In a statement, the California Highway Patrol said Escobar entered the lanes from the right shoulder of the highway about 7:35 p.m. He made it to the far left lane where an oncoming Ford van hit him. The CHP said the van’s impact caused Escobar to fall into the far left lane and and a Subaru Forester directly behind the Ford also hit him.
The first collision appeared unavoidable because Escobar walked directly in front of the Ford, according to the CHP. He died at the scene despite rescue attempts by paramedics and CHP officers.
The fatality was the fourth fatal incident on Highway 4 this year. Five people have died in those incidents.
