Chicago Bears Get Good News on Caleb Williams

The Chicago Bears are one of the most talked-about teams in the NFL right now, and for good reason. The team has one of the best and most offensive-minded coaches in the league right now in Ben Johnson, and he’s expected to work wonders with quarterback Caleb Williams, who will be entering his second season with the franchise.

Last season, the Bears were at the bottom of the NFC North, but those in the Windy City are hoping for a change. There’s a lot of hope resting on Johnson and Williams, and while the two seemed to get off to a slow start, that might be changing.

By slow start, we’re referring to the Bears’ first day of training camp back in July, where Williams started out the day by throwing an interception to linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, which led to other not-so-great things happening on the field. That day, Johnson ended up kicking everyone on the offense’s first team off the field after when they weren’t able to get lined up correctly. But, the Bears appear to have already turned things around.

Caleb Williams Seeing More Success Under Ben Johnson

Williams has looked more than solid in practice this week, and it doesn’t appear to be an anomaly. ESPN Bears reporter Courtney Cronin shared an update on Williams’ second good day at practice this week in a post on X.

“Aside from the pre-snap errors during Wednesday’s practice, I think the last two days have been a strong showing from Caleb Williams,” she said in a post on Thursday, August 14.

Cronin added, “He was decisive in both two-minute drills and trusted different receivers (Olamide Zaccheaus with 3 completions Wed., Rome Odunze with two 3rd down grabs, including a third-and-long caught in bounds to set the team up to spike it with 1 second left to set up a FG) both days to move the offense down the field.”

Last week, Williams showed life, too. The Bears posted on social media on Tuesday, Aug. 5, some footage of a special pass made by Williams to Rome Odunze down the field. It was a perfect toss and something we hope to see Williams do during NFL games.

Chicago Bears QB Caleb Williams Has Perhaps Gotten a Bad Rap

So, perhaps the tide is turning for Williams. Or, maybe the press has always just been rough on him. In a Friday, August 15 feature for Bears Goggles On, Anthony Miller notes, “There has been so much negative press about Williams and how he has looked at training camp. Some of it is warranted, as there have been some inconsistencies, but with it just being preseason, there shouldn’t be so much worry about him. It’s all part of the plan.”

Miller adds that “Bears head coach Ben Johnson has purposely thrown so much at Williams to see what sticks and what needs to be worked on. Some might not like the strategy Johnson is using, but after leading the Detroit Lions’ offense to three straight years of finishing in the top five in yards and points, he’s owed a chance to prove himself.”

So, don’t even think about writing Williams off yet. The best is likely yet to come.
